Ray Fishing in Daylight

Generally small eyes like to hunt at first and last light. On the Devon and Dorset beaches they have feeding spells that revolve around changes mid tide cycle. Either that or fish when the water is coloured but has calmed after a blow. In the BC every mark is different, but to be fair thornies are an absolute plague, most areas hold large numbers. I would say that fishing in darkness probably adds to the numbers you'll catch. 6-12 in a 4hr session isn't uncommon and I'd expect to catch 2 or 3 every trip. Some venues are better on springs, some on neaps but generally settled conditions.

Yep, couldn’t really say why I’m not a fan exactly, I watched plenty of tv fishing shows back in the day.
Internet videos don’t really do it for me.
I think mainly because a lot are sub par productions compared with the old John Wilson shows etc (that were heavily edited, obviously) but also I find the 10 minute talks on what rig they’re using boring as hell, though I know a lot of anglers like that technical aspect.

I’ve seen the odd good one, a lot of very poor ones. Mostly I give them a miss, but that’s a ‘me thing’ as opposed to believing all YouTube videos are crap.
I do watch some, but one thing I don't like is when marks get sprayed about that were closely kept or can only fit 1-2 anglers on. I know people argue that marks are there to fish and people shouldn't be up tight about sharing, but for me a lot of the enjoyment is working out a mark, each one being a different puzzle, and i've seen marks get ruined this way and turned into rubbish tips. I just think it's courtesy that if someone shares a kept/closely spoken mark with someone else, that they respect that and not put it all over youtube/facebook. Just my opinion, and of course this doesn't apply to videoing on commonly known marks like chesil, southbourne, up the channel etc. One channel I do enjoy watching are the christchurch angling vids Tom Bagnall does.

Really helpful info mate appreciate it. Hopefully when the sandeels start to show up in numbers April/May time the rays will follow shortly after

Smash Fishing? I like to watch a bit of Smash Fishing when I do the washing up. He's a hunter gatherer I can relate to. Terrible chef though 😂

I can't watch anything with shrieking hyperbole, it's the same in real life. Quiet satisfaction with a catch is what I'm after in a fishing companion. Any sort of music is out also. Natural sounds only on a YouTube experience.
That Smash fishing bloke is a twat. I subscribed to his channel years ago briefly. He went through a phase of doing 2hr live shows from his shed pissed as a Parrot, cursing & swearing and slagging off many other youtubers. His screechy voice winds me up too, and he shouts a lot of the time.

I agree with what you say about music. The other thing that has been winding me up recently is the amount of monetised channels posting videos with thumbnail images that are not items featured in the video. At lot of them are photoshopped and cannot physically exist in real life.

A couple of Norway related ones but UK shore fishing, not really.
Fair enough - I'm relatively new to fishing in the UK (only ever fished when on holiday, usually in Spain and a few times in Oz) so UK shore fishing videos have been really useful - I've learnt a lot in the last 2 years!

If I were in your position I'd probably think the same - I know enough and I'd rather go fishing than watch someone else fish 😋

I can see that. I also wouldn't like it if he was on this island, giving away the secrets and netting my bays. I don't watch stuff religiously, I'll only watch the fishing I'm interested in, mostly what we call in the Channel Islands "low water" fishing - hooking out lobsters etc. I'm not bothered about buying stuff, shed stuff etc. The adverts which seemed to have increased exponentially are nearly at the point it puts me off watching. I would be more than happy to go on a trip with him though - a fisherman in the truest sense.

My favourite vids in general are the spearfishing ones. Very relaxing and also informative.

Never get Ads on Youtube. Firefox on the Laptop with Adblock Ultimate & Adblock plus extensions installed.
Youtube did go through a brief phase of trying to circumvent the Ad blockers, and threatened to charge folk who used them to view videos.
It didn't last long and didn't come to anything. Painful to try to watch Youtube on our smart TV though.

Oh completely agree. If they’re filming on Chesil, fill their boots but if it’s remote marks not well known, ffs keep them quiet!
Especially as these days you’ll get people with very limited fishing experience who do all their ‘research’ on YouTube etc and then rock up in force at marks that can’t take it, block parking/access etc etc etc.

Yes they’re certainly a source of learning as long as you can find half decent ones, but agreed, I’d rather go fishing than watch someone else do it!

Also my only tv time is late evening and I want to watch a decent movie or mindless violence or whatever I decide to switch off to, not some YouTube hero prattling on about rigs…

Painful AND jarring!

Because of that I no longer use the YouTube app on the TV - instead I fire up the HTPC and watch it through Firefox browser (just like you) and I've got a Bluetooth keyboard so I can navigate while loafing on the sofa 😋

I think I can view the Laptop on the TV if I wanted, but I find that a 17" Laptop screen half a metre from my eyes is bigger than our 43" TV 4 metres across the room.

43inch is tiny 🫣

P.S. that's what she said
TV is on a wall mount between a window and a floor to ceiling bookcase. Can't go any bigger without it obstructing the window. Nowhere else to mount it.

The trouble with youtube video's is usually the person doing it, why do they always have the most boring, droning, irritating voice ?
there have been a few that I thought would be interesting &/or informative but the content seldom matches the description,
especially so called "reviews" that are nothing but unboxing :( a review is a report of how it performs after you've used it.

Yep, a lot of very poor stuff out there. Just because people can film and edit a bit doesn’t make them decent film makers.

Catch alot of Smalleyed rays during daylight off the beaches i fish ie Borth/Ynyslas/Tywyn they are shallow surf beaches (y)
That’s interesting. Mind you, we just have too many surfers and parking costs a fortune in the day so I don’t even try.
Certainly when I’ve still been on a beach here after dawn, all the bites have dried up, but I try and avoid being out that late these days!

Yea we dont get loads of surfers and its free parking no more than hundred yards from the beach (y) They are great beaches for Smalleyes/Bass/Turbot and dont get loads of doggies bothering you (y)
