Is there any reason to use these over all the newer bait clip designs our there?

Any situation or rigs where these may be beneficial ?

I bought a pack of 4 out of curiosity but I can't see any reason to use them

i use them for very rough ground fishing where I need a home made lead lift on the line so the rig does not get snagged up. As they sit on the line as opposed to being tied to it, they are perfect for what I need 👍

What rig is that, you have a double line going to the bait?

Yup that's the one - was shown to me by some Welsh Anglers many years ago. I use a smaller loop for the bottom hook and longer lop for the sliding hook. Main reason is that you have double thickness of line if something very big takes the bait so more chance of landing it (y)

Oh and as I mainly fish for conger I use 80lb line in the Bristol channel and 100 lb down on the Purbecks for the hook length.

But doesn't tying a granny knot in the middle of the line weaken it ? We tie a granny in middle of sacrificial weight line to make it break easier if it gets stuck

never had any problems - but i am using heavy lines and not thin breaking strains.

I have tried to snap it using 80lb mono knotted like that and cannot break it, and it is a loop being knotted not a single piece of line.

The advantages of an impact shield are that;
1/. they shield the bait from the wind, if using a worm it can stop the wind blowing the worm up the hook & line.
2/. the impact shield can slide on the line WITHOUT releasing the hook, if using a pully rig it means any stretch in the mainline can be taken up allowing a much lighter snood.
3/. Because the shield can slide on the line, if the snood needs replacing the new hook length is not as critical.

If the release clip is part of the lead or lead clip 2 & 3 don't apply limiting it's use.

I don't use them,I found sometimes they didn't release the hook,so I stopped using them & went back to using normal bait clips.
Good to know.. thanks

dont bother with shields or imp clips as fish into rough ground and would get trashed or aid snagging, just two bait clips joined together, but one inverted to hang lead/ rotten bottom on other to put hook into under tension for cast.

In SA do very similar concept.. but use a dingle dangle and hang weight of it directly... no mechanical devices at all...

Just really a short distance lobbing /casting rig where distance not critical and using usually a decent size bait, with tackle losses/ rigs paralysed been heavy, personally just use a three way 🤪 swivel, couple of bait clips, rotten bottom, lead and hook or pennel. Some would say no need for three way swivel and a waste.🤷🏽‍♂️
Other variant just use split ring instead of three way, no pun intended.👍😂
Also worth mention just a cod rough ground rig for me in north east England.

Interesting idea to use a split ring instead of 3 way swivel...

I use these..

Then I join the 80lb leader to one end of main swivel and an 80lb snood to the other end of main swivel. A 50 or 60lb line comes of the side smaller swivel to a weight with a simple bait hook on it (or a gemini big bait clip if using a plain weight that doesnt have a hook clip on it)

The line to the weight is longer by couple inches than the snood line. Hook has a dongle on it which the lead clips to for casting

Job done

In that case you weren't using them correctly. If correctly tied they are the most reliable clip going ... can take any size bait or hook and can do nothing but release if they are set up correctly. The really common mistake people make with them is they tie the rigs either without a stop above them or with the stop too far above them ... set up that way they don't work properly, they need the stop butted down on the top of the clip so the water pressure forces the clip to eject the hook when it hits the water - they are not set up like a traditional bait clip. Brilliant clip for the traditional east coast bomber rig too when we put two hooks in the same clip (as long as you put the hooks in with the point on the same side).

Will give it a try..one benefit I see is changing out snoods if they get damaged. They don't have to be as accurate as fixed clip system. As Angrybear pointed out

Ok made a 2 hook cascade rig with the impact shield.. looks like will work well.. everything releases nicely in a dry test.

However one thing that may throw a spanner in the works is the Friction of the rubber tube...

I live in very hot climate and the rubber will most likely get sticky (and deteriorate) very fast.

Will test it on hot beach asap

Does anyone have experience using it in hot climate ?
