Ian Golds Rod Rests

I’m looking for bites on the rod tips, not worrying about a bit of general wobble - that just gets disregarded the same as wind or tide movement.
Sure - the issues I were having had nothing to do with wobbling though...

My main issues were:
  • the aluminum brackets (especially the one with the rod rest heads) would easily bend under pressure (because either too thin or too soft).
  • the v-clamp for the rod cups was made from (relatively) soft plastic and its design meant reduced clamping area.
There were a few other niggles such as the aluminium brackets were a tad short which doesn't suit FS reels.

Anyway - rant over and out. Going to watch some Rick and Morty...

Yes fair enough if those are issues for you, we’ve all got different things we look for in products.

Must admit I wouldn’t mind the brackets a bit wider at times although it’s not a dealbreaker for me.

I’ve just adapted my rod rest over the years so much that it now looks like Frankenstein. I added a bit of fabricated brass to the bottom cup bracket, widened the top bracket with slightly stronger aluminium and have added hooks, rings, stabiliser brackets and wind protection tabs. I think it has increased the weight by maybe 80 grams but it has made my Golds rod rest perfect for me! I’ve been asked where I bought it from a few times but when you say you have adapted it yourself people either give you a look of disbelief or lose interest completely!

What has happened to the make do and mend mentality?

Agree. Drilled 2 holes in the cross bars of my Shakespear Salt and added another cup & 'V' bracket - it holds 3 rods now.
Also have a plan to add an extra alloy crossbar that clips on with plastic water pipe clips, with a bait tray and stainless hooks for scissors & extra traces etc.

I think most of the current generation now haven't got a clue how to wield a spanner, drill, hacksaw or anything else.

They made do and gave up! (Me included! 😂)
