Ian Golds Rod Rests

yep

and they are shit compared to historic versions
ive had to do the same as the o/p to the 6ft and 7ft so far
hybrid jobs to actually be able to continue using
alloy cup and head cross bars too thin and bend, plastic bolts sheering off, i reckon apart from the actual angled tripod and legs, the rest have been butchered and recreated

and the leg lock kits are about as much use as a growth on the side of me knob!

Fascinating! Your experience of the tripod I mean - not the growth :sneaky:

What hybrid stuff did you end up doing??

What's odd is that many shops stand by and continue to sell them, VMO have a YouTube video praising them (the reason I got mine) and this is why part of me doubts my "bad" experience. I'm either very picky OR unlucky OR others are not picky enough 🤭

Everything butchered of perfectly serviceable salt tripods ( apart from sheer off side legs) and self cut ally cup and rest bars
Just wanted lighter for the long walks
Made the golds a touch heavier but still lighter than the salts ( but way better than standard )

Same - wanted something lighter than the Shakespeare, the Ian Golds is now a touch heavier BUT more importantly: rock solid

No complaints from me having both the 6ft and 7ft super match versions but then I don't use the butt cups , never needed them . Only exception is if I fish one rod I'll just fit a single head and cup.

A tripod shootout - what a shame he didn't use a brand new Ian Golds (instead of an old modified one) to make it fair comparison.

If I read the all of the comments on that video correctly, folk are having issues getting new Ian Golds tripods, and others have said since the Ian Golds name was taken over by Daiwa, the quality isn't great.

That's right - as well as many who love their "over a decade old" Ian Golds.

What a rubbish test, once cast with tension on the line all the rods would hold snug with no rattle.
agree with others pointless having his old non standard golds against new out of the box from other makers

I half agree - because given the choice I prefer tight tolerances and fine craftsmanship

I’ve just got the new Ian Golds one. Have to say i’m impressed by it. Also have the older model as well. Not much difference except the new one has what looks like 3d printed parts. Its solid and seems well made.
Do you find the head & cup bodies grip the ally angle as well on the new as they did on the old ? because they now have much more air & less plastic.

I’ve not notice a difference, i have taken the heads/cups off and cut the ally down as hate the rods being so far apart. All went back on snug and a tight fit

This makes no sense...

Next time I pop in to the angling shop I'll check out their Ian Golds (I got mine online) - I could have ended up with a "lame" one OR my could be my standards are high 🤷‍♂️

No idea mate. But the new 7ft one i have is exactly the same as my old 6ft one. Only difference are cups/trace bar etc which look 3d printed and the old ones don’t.
Used it in pretty shitty weather on chesil the other day and it was solid, cups right up the rest to avoid the dump and it was really stable, no wobble or movement. Really like it, doubt i will use my old 6ft again.
Being a proper tackle tart (carp fishing) if it was shit i would have sent it back.

Which does yours look like ? the new golds type (ignore the luminous colour) or my old type ?
Clearly mine has much more surface area inside the V to hold it stable, while the under clamp pulls the sides together.

Check out the Viper rod rest spares on the bay, the fixings look nice & solid, they might improve yours

Thanks! It does look a lot more solid than what came with my Ian Golds. ATM I'm doing OK because I've pinched bits off my Shakespeare...doesn't stop me from having a moan about it from time to time 😋

Mine is the 5ft (because it was on offer while the 6 and 7 were not) and ATM the size is fine for what I use it for. Either way next time I get the chance to eye up some Ian Golds I will. I wonder if my plastics are different to yours...

My Golds six foot is ancient so obviously the ‘old style’ and the bottom cups are pretty wobbly these days.

But… I don’t give a flying monkey’s chuff. That one really only gets used for estuary work in the mud and rock marks where kit gets banged around or the six footer is a better size.

I have the new seven footer as pictured above and I couldn’t really even tell you if the cups wobble or not.
Maybe a bit, but it’s really not a concern to me. I’m looking for bites on the rod tips, not worrying about a bit of general wobble - that just gets disregarded the same as wind or tide movement.
