Ian Golds Rod Rests

OK proper pictures now...

Basically what I've already mentioned: soft plastic, slack tolerances (f01 vs f02 & f04), less plastic too (f05).

The other thing I forgot to mention is the aluminum the cups mount to will sit further away from the V-section using the Ian Golds clamp (f03) so even more leverage when under load.

I think so - what a shame 😞

AND quite annoying because they're not cheap
My last one (and current one) is a DB1 that was bought at least 10 years ago as a Christmas present and I’ve had zero issues with it, but I haven’t seen the very latest versions apart from your post.
So yes I’d imagine it’s corner cutting.

Ian is sadly no longer with us but I believe when it was his company he was quite passionate about quality control.

I think also when he first brought the tripod out it stood head and shoulders above others on the market but several models have been introduced since then.

HA! Regarding short arses - what size waders do you go for? I'm not sure if to go for size 6 or 7 🤔
Is that 6 or 7 foot size?

Only ask as I have a new pair that won’t fit me in the boot and can’t seem to get rid of them!

Yes and no - for sure the plastics weight a bit more (plus there are more plastic parts too) BUT the main weight difference is the extra aluminium to make it telescopic.

Ahhh a trolley - I'm tempted to get one, for now I'll stay put as I like to keep kit to a minimum.
A trolley is essential for me - due to health issues I don't venture far off the beaten track, so one of these with a plywood lid:

Or if heading for the shingle, I can put my Shakey seatbox on a set of lightweight sack trucks with wide Tyres.
I mainly use 4.5M Conti rods so an extendable tripod is essential too.

I'm 5'7 and barely have a size 7 foot :censored:

Was planning to get a pair of Vass, tried their size 8 (because apparently you should go up a size so you have space to fit layers) and it was way TOO big. So now debating if to go for 7 or 6

Do you plastics look different to mine?

Who's taken over Ian Golds then?

Yeah I take you point, other companies have managed to catch up. Rod rest back in the days must have been awful then?

As you've recently bought one you should have the manufacturers details that came with it ??
They used to be made for Ian Golds tackle by Sundridge but they folded in 2019, google doesn't want to tell me who makes them now, & the Ian Golds tackle web site only has the home page working, so I assume that company has been taken over.

I thought of you earlier and took a couple of pics of the butt cap plastics while fishing.

Looks similar tbh but it grips fine and is still adjustable when I want to move it.

Even while under a bit of stress tonight 🙄

As to who owns Golds now, no idea but wouldn’t be surprised if it was Pure Fishing

It looks like mine! I don't get, maybe mine is faulty OR maybe I'm picky/anal 🤷‍♂️

Where did you go fishing?

Nothing - it came in a transparent plastic bag, and it had a Ian Golds sticker attached to the V-section.

I've just checked on Companies House and it looks like Rebecca and Kristopher (his kids?) are "...persons with significant control...". Anyway it doesn't matter, I was just curious, and curious about the experiences you all had with tripods.

Does yours actually slide with rods on?

I don’t adjust the height of the cups much because it’s where I want it, but it works when needed.

I suppose thinking about it, the bottom cups do waggle about a bit.
I’ve never really found it to be an issue but I suppose others might.

Yeah it slowly slides down during a session - honestly the tolerances are so slack - and yes it waggles too.

I don't have any issues since cannibalising the Shakespeare parts :)

Oh mine doesn’t move. Apart from the bit of waggling but I don’t really notice it.

When/if it does it I just discount the movement, same as when I know it’s wind or wave action etc

Daiwa/Sundrige now have the rights to Golds tripods I think.

Ian.

I think I read the same on the Dark side a few years back. Was going to mention that earlier.

As i said, Daiwa bought the name, the tripods themselves are built elsewhere. (y)

yep

and they are shit compared to historic versions
ive had to do the same as the o/p to the 6ft and 7ft so far
hybrid jobs to actually be able to continue using
alloy cup and head cross bars too thin and bend, plastic bolts sheering off, i reckon apart from the actual angled tripod and legs, the rest have been butchered and recreated

and the leg lock kits are about as much use as a growth on the side of me knob!
