Advice Fishing line/Shock leader colour?

Thanks one and all, very much appreciated 👍

I'm planning on using 30lb mono mainline (I already have some) and the 60lb line as a shockleader, I was also going to make up some more 2 hook flapper rigs with the 60lb line too. Would that work?

I already have several 2 hook flapper rigs made with the 30lb mono, I was using them with my 10lb mainline on my smaller reels. Are those 30lb rigs going to be redundant once I start using 30lb mainline?
30lb mainline strikes me as very heavy, and will restrict your casting distance.

I use the same reels for beach fishing regardless of underwater terrain, and if I'm fishing off the likes of Mountbatten Pier here, there are a lot of snaggy gaps between the Pier foundation blocks and on the sea bed, hence I stick to 28 - 30Lb.

It doesn't seem to affect my casting much if on a clean shingle beach, and as others have said many times, quite often the fish are not very far out.

Yes it's mono.

I was hoping to use 30lb with a new rod and reel, an Okuma 8k Surf and a 14' beachcaster
Depends on the ground but that’s pretty heavy for clean or slightly mixed ground.
Will definitely lose a lot on your cast.

Ok, thanks for the advice. Every day's a school day.

I'm tempted to load the 30lb mono as I already have that. I'm very new to beach fishing and although I will likely be on the sand more often than not, there might be times that I'm not.

I don't want to buy another reel at this stage, but I might consider buying the shallower reel of the Okuma and put 15lb on that at some point. Decisions decisions 🤔

Ideally the reel comes with, or you could buy, a spare spool so you can load up with each.
Personally if only one spool is available I’d put 20lb on it, or a low diameter 25.
Depending on the diameter of the 30, it is really overkill for clean ground fishing.
It’s a bit like buying a 4x4 with chunky tyres but planning to use it mostly on a racetrack - yep it’ll get around the track but it won’t perform as well or be much fun to drive.

If it was me, for the sake of saving a few quid because you already have some line, I’d spend a few more and get line more suited to the job.
Doesn’t have to be top notch expensive stuff, mid budget line such as Daiwa Sensor in 18 or 20lb would do you.
Given you’re learning I wouldn’t go TOO light anyway, 20ish would be more forgiving.

Thanks again 👍

I can get a shallow spool for a little over £30, but it obviously has less line capacity, possibly not enough. I'll go with your suggestion of 20lb line, that seems like a good compromise.

My local Go Outdoors has red 20lb Sonik Ultrasonic at 0.38 diameter (820m) for only £9. They also sell 20lb green Berkley for a similar price, although they don't list the diameter of the line. I'll pop in and have a look.

I went in to buy a spool of line for £9, I came home having spent £27.

I'm not quite sure what happened, I remember seeing the bargain basket of goodies by the wall, the rest it just a blur.

I don’t know the Sonik but Berkeley is fine.

Tbh very few lines are terrible. The only one I gave up on was Red Ice but that snapped like cotton

Thanks. I got the green Berkley Trilene.

A funny thing happened in the shop. I'd just picked up my spool of line, when one of the three young lads stood next to me said "you look like you know what you're doing", (pfffftttt) then he started asking me about which strength line they should be buying for sea fishing etc.

My immediate reaction was (pffftttt) as above, then I told him that I was also a newbie, but I that I'd had some good advice on this forum today. I actually felt as though I knew what I was talking about :ROFLMAO:
