Akios S-Line 656 csm shuttle

It was £100 and very clean, but I've decided to pass on it without haggling over the price as I'm presently looking at a used 9' lure rod which looks to be best suited/designed for fs reels. There will always be further tasty looking used multis if and when I'm thinking about getting a better suited rod.
Oh so you’re not looking beach casters/conti rods then?

Had to look up "casting cannon" !
I use Breakaway Cannons on my beach rods. Great bit of kit. It pays to go for the quality of the genuine article - lots of cheap copies around.

Maybe later. Came across almost new Abu spin-lure rod at a v good price and went for that thinking spin/lure most active (more interesting ??) way of fishing. Haven't plonked for the fs reel to go with it yet. So many options, but it will likely be a 3000 size (perhaps 4000) reel I've worked out. Hoping something good/well-rated 2nd-hand will catch my eye once fishers have open their Christmas pressies and start to review their older reel holdings !

Whereabouts in the land are you? That might help influence what type of set up you would get the most use out of?

With family along the SE England coast it's where I will mostly go good-weather fishing because dont reckon will make trip to coast for fishing when it's rougher weather. Holiday fishing other places mainly towards south west as well. Checkin sea fishing stuff and advice a 9' spin-lure rod seemed a reasonable place to start Not so good for rougher weather and seas but thinking I will ne staying at home when the wind and waves are well up unless I really get the bug :) and get other suitable gear.

I'm getting that a fixed-reel set-up would be my best starting point, but there's a 2nd-hand Akios S-Line 656 that has caught my attention. Might not be the bees knees, but any thoughts ? - good for a multiplier newbie perhaps ?

I'll go against the grain.
Fixed spool reels are not necessarily easier to USE than a multiplier reel.

The difficulty is getting a multiplier set up correctly.

The biggest mistake a new user makes is having them overfilled and running way too fast.

I started my OH Jax off with a fixed spool. It was a disaster that almost stopped her from fishing.
Awkward, cumbersome, snatchy, unnatural are just some of the descriptions.

I switched her onto a multi, a cheap
tronix mag, filled ¾ full with .40 line and some thick oil in the bearings.

It was a revelation.
Simple, natural and definitely easier to use👍👍

I can't get on with multiplier reels - no way have I ever been able to 'train' my thumb to brake the spool despite trying. Same with a baitcaster. Got fed up with bird's nests, so accepted defeat & gave up.

Multipliers with level wind are best avoided for shore fishing, as I found out the hard way. I bought a new beach rod from a shop in West Bay many years ago, and they offered me a 'package deal' of a multiplier with the rod. You guessed it - level wind. A decent tackle store would never have done that.

Thanks for your view and advice. Some other members say much the same but I now have the Abu lure rod and the guides are for fixed reel. I'm happy enough right now but I will consider a braked multi again for any future 2nd rod and reel setup possibly a long beach or surf rod which I am thinking are not much different. Thanks all for comments and here's a thought I had. Occurs to me that 2 rod measures would be useful when comparing rods online. So thats the overall rod length and the length from reel to tip.

Got to agree, especially about trying to run them too fast. Wouldn't be keen on the level wind myself.
What is the matter with level wind reels please ? No immediate concern any more but the Akios I first considered had a level wind system and why might I would I avoid in future?

I started on multis with a level wind but found that it restricted the distance I could get. Got very frustrated so tried a CT reel instead, 525 mag, and never looked back.

The level wind mechanism as @JLD said, slows the spool down and so restricts casting distance.
It has to 'drive' the level wind mechanism to & fro as the lead is cast out.
It also adds extra weight to the reel, and some have a habit of the level wind parts wearing quite quickly.
Fine for boat angling where you are not casting far, but not good for shore fishing.

Or look for rods with sliding reel seats (SRS) then put the reel where ever suits.

If using for beach casting you can’t get your thumb right over the spool for grip during a reasonably powerful cast as the top bar that guides the level wind gets in the way and the spool will slip.

Depends on what size your hands are, or you can't reach the 200yds distance.;)
