Hi everyone, hope all is well. Up to this point in fishing, I've always used egg whisks but more recently toying with the idea of converting to multipliers for some of my fishing. I was wondering which reel would suit light beach/estuary fishing, being user friendly, light, but enough guts to deal with any decent smoothounds or bass. Insanely long range isn't a top priority, as I only cast up to around the 100yd mark at best anyways. Have looked at the 7HT, Slosh20, Fathom 12, Abu 6500 etc. but wanted to gain a bit of advice from others before making a decision. I'll likely be going down the second hand market and the reels will mostly be used on 11'6 bass rods or 13' light beach rods. Any info or advice much appreciated. Tight lines,

I used to use a 7ht for estuaries and light beach, not sure if there still worth it or if there's anything else out there for the price range, only just getting back into things and a lot has changed over the years.

Used to be perfect for flounders (sometimes 3 on a rig), bass, whiting small pollack and codling.

I have looked into picking up another pair, mine were from the late 90s/early 2000s, and have heared that they are no longer made in Japan (unsure if the quality has changed over the years). If there of the same build quality I would get another set. Never really got on with the abu, and used the sl20/30sh for heavier work.

For the price I brought a new Tronix Mag Multiplier, works just fine with me as do the TF Gear Multies.

If you're happy with 2nd hand I'd look out for ABU 6000/6001 (lefty) or Penn 515 mag, I've been seeing a few at quite reasonable prices on the local FB market place.

515 Mag2 should do a good job for you. I hear people saying the current Mag4 isn't built so well so you might be better off with and older second-hand one anyway as long as it's in reasonable condition.

If you see an ABU 5500 at a good price that's worth considering too. The 5500 is smaller than the 6500 as it has a narrower spool and goes well with a light rod. Trouble is that they were never as popular as the 6500 size so there aren't so many about for sale.

Any multi will fine. If you get a Fathom/Saltist you can ise those on heavy ground as well.

I would say the SL20sh would be my first though. I was taught with one and found it better/easier to use than a 6500 mag. Plus it has the grunt for rough stuff and also a ratchet which i very handy

I like the ABU 6000 which can be picked up very reasonably, or Akios. I bought a magged Akios on ebay for £40 earlier this year. I use them for pike rather than light beach work, but have used the 6000 on the beach in the past, and it did the job perfectly well. Whatever you choose, if you are considering ebay I would give it a miss until after Christmas - prices have shot up recently.

My TFGear multies are 6500 size the same as my Akios, My old abu's are 5000 and 5500c + a couple of coffee grinders - Jarvis Walker with s/s shafts suitable for salt water.

Until this year I had not used my old multiplier reels for decades, but I got the urge to try them again too. So far its been mostly my ancient c1970 ABU 6000c on a heavy (up to about 90g casting) spinning rod for light estuary fishing. I put in new bearings but the retrieve is still awfully slow so i’ll only be using it for short range duty.

I have recently bought a Penn Fathom ll 12SD and fitted one of those nicely balanced paddle handles from blakdog. I’m enjoying getting to know this reel, its smooth running, just the right size line capacity wise, the gears feel stronger than the small ABU’s and it has a much better retrieve rate. The old ABU is heading for retirement other than maybe the occasional summer evening fishing the creek…

Thanks for the info, will have a look cheers!

Here's a vote for a fathom 12.
But on a bass rod any of the 6500 size reels are probably a better match.
Personally for bassing on a bass rod I like fs baitrunners.

Thanks mate, yeah I usually use baitrunners for in close bass work but been very kindly given a lovely estuary/light beach rod built for multi and thought it would be fun to match it with a light multi reel. Appreciate the info, Al,

I use my fs reels for estuaries or fresh water fishing. Flyrods and greys grx for trout and sea trout etc.

Pretty sure you can upgrade your 6000c retrieve - Blakdog on here will know. On bearings, I had a jammed bearing on the old 6000c I bought on ebay recently (probably one of the original bearings). I eventually got it moving with force + WD40 and 3-in-1, and it screamed on the first couple of casts, but works fine now. In fact it out-casts (same rod, and line) my other, later 6000c which has good bearings.
