Penn casting special

No such thing as the holy grail reel or anything else (like boats!) there's always some compromises
My point was that if you want the longest casting, simplest to use and reasonably robust reel out of the box then the ST wins hands down. Sure you have to look after it a bit and you are not going to crank a fish through a big sea if your remotely sensible.
Mine have 1000s of hours fishing in them now and sure I have had to spend money on them to keep them going but I have tried everything else and I do mean everything else!!!.
Nothing gives you the simple simplicity coupled with the performance of a ST.
Properly looked after they are very reliable and even as they get the wobble of death you can see it coming on so it's not instant failure.
I am not going to get into a VFM discussion because I don't care.

Apologies if one is wrong, and I'm sure @blakdog is back can correct me, but was it not the late Mick Sullivan who first introduced the pinion support sleeve to the 7HT?
The pinion support has to be the correct pinion support too.
As Russ mentioned the long ones will shift the load by leveraging onto the main shaft which will also cause damage.
The reel itself has a working life, you crank heavy weed and fish your wearing it out as you go.
Sure the pinion support helps but as soon as you buy and own one of these your buying into the fact your have something that won't last forever unless your very sensible with it.

Pretty much spot on 👍

Interesting read, but I still hope my 6500 mag elites & 525 mags (USA) outlast me,
I couldn't face the trial & error of finding another one I'm comfortable with

There is only one holy grail reel for clean medium ground and that's the 7ht mag ST.
It's not for medium heavy..... it's for max medium but they are the best in my opinion.
Does the 7ht St suffer the same as the Blue 7ht mag from the magnafudge system not engaging when lobbed. I do a lot of bass fishing in the surf and lobbing baits 30/40 meters, my blue 7 HT was never very predictable at low revs so to speak.

The ST's as the blue Mags don't like lazy lobs, it wont get the Mag system working, they need a good whack to get them working.

I would never use a ST for this type of fishing.
1) Casting although you can just put your thumb on the spool it's just unpleasant.
2) No ratchet.
3) Better to have faster retrieve.
4) Marinating your ST in surf spray is futile given above.
5) A fathom 12 is perfect or a decent FS reel will both outperform a ST in these conditions.
You want a ratchet, super fast retrieve and the freedom to baste it in neat salt without feeling upset.... and your thumb will feel better not being subjected to your leader knot every cast.

Or you could underload the line on one or put some horribly thick oil in its bearings....perish the thought! As said there's always a compromise and the single perfect reel will never be made

Yes, you could do that.
I guess that's why many of us have different reels for different uses.👍

Mick laid claim to it (he started producing them for the 7HT Turbos) but he wasn't ... they were available locally to me in Clacton long before Mick started supplying them.

The earlier ones here (North Essex) were either in nylon or aluminium and touted for the Original 7HT ... I actually serviced a reel for a long time customer the other week that still had one of the originals in (it was way past it's shelf life). I used to get them from Porter's Tackle in Colchester back then but I think they were marketed by Dave (Costa?) (the man behind the DC Easy Link) and they were available all over Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk I believe. There was a mention and the occasion ad for them in the fishing mags at the time I seem to remember. @concrete will probably remember far enough back to when I ended up fitting them to pretty much every 7HT Original in our local fishing club ... good advert as many of them are still running.

Like a lot of things ... stuff is often reinvented and ownership of the idea claimed on the net. I came across an article in a Sea Angler from November 1986 the other day by Dave Harris about using the Hair Rig with Eel Section baits to catch Tope ... that is another classic example of an original idea being given a stupid name and then "rebranded" as if it is a great new discovery.

I find I can cast just as far when fishing with my USA mags as I can with any of my 7HTs, including the blue mag. I’ve had a go with a mate’s ST and hated it. It just felt bulbous to me and that handle is awful. As far as the mag system not liking a lazy lob, that’s true, but for those of us who learnt to cast with unbraked reels with no bearings that’s not a problem. 😊

At the age of fourteen when I started beach fishing i had a Mitchel 600p, if you could use one of them none of todays reels hold no fear.. ;)

Ian.

That's because you have hands like Grape Ape ... dainty you ain't! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I much prefer the handle on my blue mag.
I still think the turbos were the best 7HT daiwa made. I’ve still got two, but they are for field casting only, as it’s only really the spool and bearings which aren’t knackered. 🤣🤣

602P for me and a 7ft boat rod. It was a revelation when I strapped a 6HM on and was able to cast the length of the local football pitch. 😊
