To prevent deep hooking of predators that attack a bait a bit differently to truffling mud pigs
I guess that the rig itself must play a part.. the bait is anchored or tethered to the lead by a five inch hook length.. so as the fish tilts itself level after picking up the bait.. so the lead acts as a bolt rig and hooks the fish itself.

Yes. Short hook lengths to prevent swallowing and the use of down eyed hooks/tubing/kickers designed to alter the geometry of the rig so once it tightens the hook point turns down and into the bottom lip. In theory.
