Continental Rod and FS Reel Suggestions Please

Apologies for jumping in, but I'm also thinking about getting myself a rod & reel combination and trying some shore fishing.

Would this setup be suitable for my location, Yorkshire coast and the North East?

He nearly has that with a decent old shakespeare and a shimmy biomaster, although the line lay on the penn would take braid.
The one thing I'm convinced about from your first post to so many others is that a more modern FS reel would offer much better line lay. BTW Tournamag replied to a PM I sent and gave me lots of good advice too.

It makes obvious sense to keep practising with the Shakespeare K2. I'm fishing on the Wirral on Friday and I will use my Biomaster with the heavier 40lb braid set up and 80 braid shockleader. We're coming up to the infamous Black Friday deals time and I'm also in the process of thinning down my game tackle so I will be buying a decent FS reel.

Three that are in my possibles list are:

a) Penn Surfblaster not budget but seemingly a good reel for the money with Spare spool too.
b) Diawa Emblem Surf 45
c) Shimano Power Aero if I really want to push out the boat (Tournamag uses these and do you as well?)

But first I need to tidy up my overhead casting and possibly OTG too (though would I use that much??)

But I cannot say a big enough thanks for all the great advice I've had. My initial urge was to buy a very through actioned Conti rod rated for about 5 oz but acquainting myself with the actually conditions in the Dee/Mersey estuaries, which, if they are as weedy `and prone to strong tides as people say, it might make such an urge rather silly.

Mick - In case it's useful I've got a pair of the Emblem Surfs, they have a one piece bail and I like them a lot. My only gripes are the methods of attaching the handle to the reel (too much play - prefer the direct screw on types) and the shape of handle knobs which I've changed to aftermarket round ones.

Tourno is spot on about the power aeros.
I have some original shimano techniums but prefer big bait runners for the beach.
The power aeros are good.
I guess the question is a value one, if you spend 125 quid on something but you could have got something special for 200 how will you feel?.
As far as conti rods listen to tourno he is the Oracle...

Could you tell me which big bait runners and do they have the excellent line lay too. I've used bait runners for my pike fishing for some time but too small for surf.

14000 xtb long cast.
The line lay is great but I use them because they have the baitrunner and line lay.
I have the Holy grail xta techniums the last ones built in Japan but just prefer using the bait runners....

It's probably a daft question, but wanted to check.

Never daft questions Andy…..
I’m not going to offer advice as I have no knowledge of rod or reel. I would definitely ring Veals and ask to speak to someone who could advise. They have been pretty approachable in the past……ok they might say “Yes” just to sell to you , but hopefully and probably not.
Have you any venues in mind and do you know if they are clean beaches or clay, rocky, stony?
Have a Google and see if there are any reviews on YouTube, there are for loads of rods.
I would be happy to buy and use that combo on the clean, sandy Lincs beaches when there wasn’t a big sea running but for your area I wouldn’t know.

Thanks Goatfish, it appears to be mixed terrain as far as I can see, more sand below Bridlington and rougher ground to the North of Brid. I think I should be looking for a rod that's suitable for mixed ground
.

This setup would work well for the Yorkshire coast and North East. The Vercelli or Tronixpro rods are great for long casts from the shore, and the Daiwa Crosscast Surf reel is solid for saltwater use. Perfect for your area, good luck, and enjoy the fishing!

Thanks Wayman, much appreciated

I would have thought they would be too soft for a lot of marks up that way

I emailed Veals this afternoon and asked for their recommendations. They've suggested a couple of rods and a reel that should be suitable.

I'm not sure about the Okuma reels?

Penn Tidal 423 100-250g Rough Ground

Vercelli Oxygen Cobra 2 420

Okuma Surf 8K

i'm with chesil on these reels, i use a pair and they are excellent, bait runner facility very useful when retreating on an incoming tide.

I finally bought my long cast reel, a Penn Tidal XT 8000 long cast. Reviews were favourable and it’s the sort of price bracket that seemed right for an angler (me) who does not live on the coast but who wants to enjoy some occasional leisure sea fishing. I will load the two spools with 30lb and 40lb braid both with 80lb shock leaders. I will pair this with my Shakespeare K2 Blue Extreme 14'. A rod that some kind posters said is not a bad stick and is suitable for some of the more challenging conditions in the Mersey and Dee estuaries. I simply need to persist with this rod until casting with it feels more like second nature, as Goatfish did. My older but virtually mint Biomaster will serve as a backup. And when I’m fishing with my Grey’s BZe 11’ 6” bass I have the choice of my tournament converted original Millionaire or a 8000 Saragossa fs spinning reel. On cleaner beaches I have pike rods with suitable test curves or a Shakespeare 10’ Odessa Flattie rod to use on clean beach conditions to get a little more sport from flatties and bass.

Once again I cannot thank the kind forum members enough for their suggestions. I have an operation to get out of the way imminently and after my recuperation I hope to report back on some of my fishing trips.

Looking forward to your fishing reports Mick.
Good luck with the op……I’m presuming you won’t need to change your forum name afterwards….😬😬

Okuma are in the same stable as Penn.

I have used a couple of the 8k surf reels for a few years now. Not had any issues but I do clean them and don't abuse them.
