Looking at baitcaster rods/multiplier reels (casual interest right now), came across article on rods where guides spiralled around the rod with butt guide at 0 degrees (upright) and one or more follow-on guides angled around rod so the line eventually comes off rod at 180 degrees (underneath the rod).

Spiral wraps not much discussed on the web, but intresting idea. Anyone with spiral wrapped rod and what you reckon ?

They became popular again about the late 1980`s early 1990`s but have been around much longer. Also called acid wraps as the guy that "reinvented" them up was a bit of a beach bum in California and they reckon he could have been on something. They do work but were developed in the days when fixed spool reels were not up to the job of some deep wrecking etc so multiplier on top and then spiral it. Nowadays just use a modern fixed spool. The first guide (butt guide) is not vertical it is offset roughly 3 degrees based on which hand you wind with. If right hand winding the offset is to the left and vice versa if left hand winding. Built a few of them but thankfully not many as I say, they work but look dumb.

I understand the theory of them, in the same way that I understand the theory of interline rods
Personally I have never found it an issue to keep a rod the correct way up (for a multiplier) while fighting a fish,
including my various trips overseas catching "Game fish".
Were you to try & catch huge fish on light tackle, thus fighting for hours to the very edge of exhaustion, I suppose rod control might become more of an issue, but to me they're just another gimmick.
