shock leaders

I'm curious as to the abrasion resistance of braid leaders.
For years we were taught to add a mono rubbing leader to braid as it was better at dealing with abrasion.
Has this changed?
Not as far as we know Shirl.. (y)

I'm not sure it ever was the case. Maybe with the finer lines or in a equal poundage situation but 80lb 4 strand is tough stuff

Opps sorry I thought this was about England beating Ireland :ROFLMAO:

So many different opinions! I tried braid as a mainline a few years ago but didn't like it. Tried it as a shockleader but on the BC reefs it didn't last as well as mono. I was also concerned that after a few trips the braid seemed to be fraying and going flat. Possibly because it was cheap braid but I've gone back to monofil. Still got braid on a reel I only use for spinning though, seems ok for that.

Enjoyed clean ground fishing and tapered/ un tapered mono shockers and have still some several spools including greased weasel ( fantastic name 😜) but now only fish heavy ground and braid but still use 90 lb braid shocker as rubbing leader but now and again lose it breaking out but just carry on without for the night or change spool.
Do miss multi and mono though.🤷🏽‍♂️

I just looked at knots for joining shot leader to main line and to rig.

And what i saw was a one knot on line and then and then twisted shock leader knot.

I would rather take my chance with straight through mono!

I wouldn't want to tie one of them on the beach at night
no not ideal BUT i can do them very fast and easy...the video of course is slowing everything down to teach. literally just hold the two ends up, spin bobbibn down then back up, takes a few seconds, then tie off...lots ways to tie off too...can just tie a few half hitches or a rizutto whip finish...no need to get fancy if you just whipping one up to fish... the holding power is in the wraps not the finishing knots... and by the way...it has been proven that is better NOT to wrap the first ones down tight but spaced then wrap back up tight...

here is how should be done.... but this is to mono..i was trying to show the braid to braid in previous video

Do you mean "the shockleader knot" a 6 turn tucked blood knot in the main line & overhand (or fig8) on the end of the leader for the blood knot to bite against ? Takes about 30 seconds to tie & doesn't need some daft gizmo.
Personally I never use braid for a leader because the stretch in mono acts as a damper when the fish is on a very short line.

a uni to uni works too but on the braid side must use a modified uni..

bobbin may be daft...but it is used to tie 100% braid to leader knots all over the world by the extreme and heavy fish boys...think Tuna and GT . where you have to fight extreme forces.... i agree in uk most fisheries would not require such extreme knot. and if you dont want use the bobbin can do the FG knot almost as strong as the PR. Also it forms the slimmest knot available so can go through guides easily

Could not be doing that!

Far easier knots

All depends what you are fishing for... in SA , Aussie ,USA and Oman etc they are fishing some big and powerful fish, GT , Tuna etc...you need 100% knots ...when fishing light tackle as most of UK fishing is, there are many many much more simpler knots that will work just fine. horses for courses
