Out again on the Bristol Channel yesterday, and at a renowned know snag pit full of braided line snags from anglers that have not worked out how to use a rotten bottom link ... Sighs.....
I fished slightly to the right of the worst of it and after casting out a plain 5oz lead and reeling in found some clear ground. For a change it was not raining and dare I tempt fate by saying the sun came out! (that will bugger it and we will have rain now by the Bank Holiday/Coronation weekend).
Baits were whole squid and sections of herring. I fished hard for 7.5 hours, at first on the boulders, then on the cliff. Surprisingly my soon to be 67 year old legs are fine this morning, so the long yomp and constant scrambling about must be doing me some good.
I landed 6 conger all small (best about 6lb) 2 thornbacks 4 - 5lb each and 5 doggies. 20 years ago you would never see a dogfish here, I can only assume that now in conditions where salinity levels are high in the Channel, Douglas the Doggie finds the environment to it's liking. I did lose one heaviest fish that screamed off, pulled about for about 30 seconds and let go of the bait - it could have been anything, even a mermaid. .. Well maybe not as I imagine being Somerset they are all in the nearest chippy scoffing their faces....
Rigs used were again my rough ground rigs, link to my eBay shop enclosed. The only difference is that I use lead lifts as well to get that extra movement from the snags on reeling in.
