As title suggests wondering what everyone's regular tackle maintenance routines are? To be honest my startup gear that I've been using just comes out the car and straight into the cupboard where it stays until the next trip 😬
I've recently got some new fixed spool reels and hopefully soon to get a couple of better quality rods and would like to keep them in top notch condition. I'm thinking showering down rods and reels after a session to remove any salt and then a 6 monthly service on the reels. Will this be adequate to keep my new gear in great condition? Looking forward to hearing people's views
Thanks 🙂

Only now fish in autumn and winter and can get blathered at times so I just hose everything down ( especially waders😜) including rods and reels as matter of habit, some multi reels never had service in their lives bar oiling once a blue moon.

So a quick hose down will be good enough to prevent rusting of rod rings etc?

Don’t think some bother that much and probably my regime not really needed but over time may get browning round guides on some rods but personally pay more attention to rinsing reels, considering the salty environment.
Sometimes see reels for sale with saltwater rash for some reason or other. Edit, thorough hose probably better way to put it but do fish regular in the winter season and if using shimano fs reels maybe a rinse under tap with Luke warm water especially the spools.
All really depends how far you want to take it and some find therapeutic am told.

I wipe my rods down only if they get messed up with weed etc, however my reels always get a rinse of warm water as soon as I return from a session before they have chance to dry out.
Then rigs get new snoods and hooks and away we go again

I don't fish as often as I would like due to poor health. When I have been out, I always try to keep rods & reels off the sand and away from salt water as much as practically possible. Just put an extra rod holder on my tripod so that I can keep my lure rod off the ground.
Reels get rinsed under the tap, rods with the garden hose, and all of the end tackle goes in the kitchen sink in soapy water whilst I also scrub any bait residue off my paws.

Occasionally I give the rods and reels a wipe over with FS 365. It's a motorcycle protective spray that help to combat salt corrosion.
Different brands of a similar thing about, but this is good stuff. They do a 250ml small one for £4.00 too.

I wash my rods and reels after each trip + oil the reels as well. Dry rod eyes & blank with a cloth, never had a problem.

So you never take a motorbike in the sea then? ACF 50 is a far better product imo, having owned motorbikes for over 50 years.

Rinse reels under the tap, remove side plates and spools let stand overnight, oil/grease if required. Rods get wiped down with a micro-fibre cloth. Job done. (y)

Good advice Ian, but none of my reels have got any side plates! 😁😁
That FS 365 I mentioned is good stuff. Someone also said (on Youtube I think) if you do get a little green corrosion on rod rings, soak some kitchen roll in white wine vinegar and wrap it around the rings to soak. Supposed to clean them up a treat. Never needed to try it!

No side plates Dave... what do you put your bread and butter on. 🤣

Some great advice there guys thanks. I hadn't even considered washing off rigs/terminal tackle. I've just been cutting off swivels and clips and binning the hooks and line.

End of night usually have some bits of salvage and a couple of baited or semi baited Rigs which get hoyed in bucket of cold water on return to blashford manor and dealt with later, much later 😁

Shouldn't you be out looking for rods Steve, not wasting your time on here... :D :D

I always give my rods & reels a good wipe down with a soft cloth, when I get home after a fishing session, then next day give them another wipe down with another soft cloth before putting them away.

I’m very particular and structured about my tackle after care regime - it’s all thrown in the exact same corner of the shed without fail 😇😇😇
Throw your gear in the shed Mr Fish, tut tut... :D

Ian.
