As has already been said used them in the 70's for freshwater ledgering,could leave them on when winding in. Still have them.
Also another one was a hair clip pushed through a cork. String tide to rod rest & then clipped on to line. When striking the cork & clip would fall away.
What happened was someone put the washing up tops on eBay a couple of years ago & went for silly money, so people keep listing them hoping to get the same
