One of my happy placesBeautiful part of the world to have a crap session though!
Really Ollie? I went to Primary School at Mawnan Smith? Did my 20 yards swimming at Helford village and used to go Mack fishing with my Dad off the rocks there. I remember even now….the water was black with them and no joeys like we catch now. I last went back about 45 years ago.One of my happy places
Yes I know it. Spent many a happy holiday down there. Messing about round the estuary fishing ans swimming and getting the boat back and forth to helford. I can also remember going out in my Dads friends old boat from Port Navas, right out around The Manacles rocks and not a life jacket on board. As I said earlier I was fine though as I had done my 20m!
They are lucky buggers that live there…..we moved up to Norfolk when I was 13, felt like a right tourist when I went back as a young man.Yes I know it. Spent many a happy holiday down there. Sad really, I was talking to the guy in the shop in Helford last time I was down there and he said it was a horrific percentage of holiday lets in the village. What a lovely community it must have beenThey are lucky buggers that live there…..we moved up to Norfolk when I was 13, felt like a right tourist when I went back as a young man.
Had a couple of weeks down there in 1988 and had a fantastic time which left great memories, so always wanted to go back, but it seems it is no longer the same place!Sad really, I was talking to the guy in the shop in Helford last time I was down there and he said it was a horrific percentage of holiday lets in the village. It’s still a beautiful place and always worth goingHad a couple of weeks down there in 1988 and had a fantastic time which left great memories, so always wanted to go back, but it seems it is no longer the same place!
We only lived down that way for a couple of years unfortunately. Previously, I was brought up on a farm near the N Cornwall coast…..Port Isaac ‘Doc Martin). It was a fairly large farm with several farm workers houses…..every one is a holiday let now (Treharrock Farm, Pendoggett). I’ve promised my old Mum that when the time comes we will take hers and my Dads ashes back to scatter…..it would be fitting to try and rent our old house maybe.Sad really, I was talking to the guy in the shop in Helford last time I was down there and he said it was a horrific percentage of holiday lets in the village. Similar story to where I grew up near Kingsbridge & Salcombe. There used to be a great local community there 50 or so years ago, but the immigrant Grockles with money turned Salcombe into holiday home central, and when they'd run out of properties to buy in Salcombe, they started doing the same around Kingsbridge. Salcombe is like a ghost town in the winter now.Sad really, I was talking to the guy in the shop in Helford last time I was down there and he said it was a horrific percentage of holiday lets in the village. That’s really sad Don. It does annoy me when locals are not able to afford to buy a house just because someone (usually from London) wants a holiday home there and is willing to pay way over the odds for the property. It ruins communities and like you say, leaves places as ghost towns during the winter!Similar story to where I grew up near Kingsbridge & Salcombe. I never wanted to move into the city, but had no choice at the time. No chance of being able to afford to move back to my home area now.
There was talk of doing away with the 50% council tax discount for 2nd homes, and doubling it, but not sure if it actually happened. That’s really sad Don. The idea of doubling the council tax was good in principle but was never really going to work, because a few hundred pounds would never act as a deterrent to those who could afford three or four hundred thousand for a holiday home, whilst any money raised was always just going to get swallowed up into normal council spending rather than funding affordable housing in the area. There was talk of doing away with the 50% council tax discount for 2nd homes, and doubling it, but not sure if it actually happened.
They were going to use the money to build more affordable homes for locals, but what 'affordable' means is open to different interpretation.
Sorry Searcave, we have sort of took over your thread. Maybe we need to move this discussion onto the chat thread.
Yes apologies, we have taken your thread off piste a littleNo problem at all it’s good to talk
Mackerel numbers significantly less these days
In three years I have only found one shoal
But size has been getting a little better
Off piste or not, it why I never moved. Why would I leave a decent community to live in a suburban shithole?Yes apologies, we have taken your thread off piste a little![]()
