When you have chittled away all of the 5lb section with tying flies on you can add extra tippet to bring it back up to 9ft or even a bit longer should you wish.

I just use Drennan sub surface 5lb fly leader, usually cut about 12ft in length, tapered leaders are fine but expensive.

Never found any great use or advantage to tapered leaders. catch just fine on a straight through Maxima or similar then attach my class tippet

I used the Profil tapered leaders for salmon for a while, think I still have some about the place.

I have not used them fro trout.
