Hey guys just wondering if anyone can shed some light on something for me please? I've been trying to look up tide times for Chesil Beach but everywhere I look seems to have 4 highs and 4 lows per 24hr? Is this correct? All the beaches up my way (Kent/Sussex) have 2 highs and 2 lows which makes perfect sense to me given the moon cycles etc. Is there some extra thing to consider that affects the tides at Chesil that I'm not aware of? Look forward to hearing your thoughts and learning something new 😃
Cheers

Same here; what on earth is going on?!?!

I suppose the unusual tide times are inevitable since the English channel has the Atlantic on one side and the North sea on the other.

I have no clue but if I look a little further down the coast at Plymouth for example it seems to be back to 2 tide cycles per day as I would expect 🤷🏼‍♂️ lol

There are double tides at Southampton, various theories, one is the effect of the Isle of Wight. The effect lessens until you get west to West Bay where it is hardly noticeable.
It is confusing the see the tide times in list form, easier to understand if you look at the graphs.

Thanks cap'nhaddock that's useful 👍 I'm still curious as to what causes the extra 'small tides' and also if they need to be factored into any plans or do they make little difference? 🤯

For a detailed explanation try wading through this,

You need to factor the double tide if you fish in Poole harbour or Weymouth Harbour, sometimes there's little water for ages, but I don't think it affects beaches much

I will have a read through that, I was unable to find any info when googling myself. Thanks 👍

I don't understand that, unless one is the Sea side & one the Fleet side ?
I never put Chesil Beach anyway I search for the mark, West Bexington, Abbotsbury, Portland etc

I've attached screenshots from a website and also from an app I use for quick tide references as examples

Y
Best website I've found is https://www.tidetimes.org.uk/
Idiot proof, select the location from the map, use the calendar for the date.
Yep, I find that the most accurate.

I normally just put Chesil tbh. No doubt one end will be a bit different to the other but in the scheme of things the time difference won’t affect my session.

Tide barely moves three feet anyway 😂😂😂

Yeah its very weird 🤯 lol
I asked CoPilot and it says:

"...Yes, the tide times for Bournemouth can be quite complex due to the influence of the English Channel. The English Channel is known for having some of the strongest and most intricate tides in Europe. This complexity arises from the interaction of various tidal harmonics and the unique topography of the region. These variations are influenced by the broader tidal patterns of the English Channel, which can lead to phenomena like double high and low tides in certain areas..."

Its response is based heavily on this article:
