Buying terminal tackle online

You would know better than me as you’re in the trade, but surely items bought in bulk tend to be cheaper overall and that can be passed on to the customer to an extent?

I get the packaging point, but I would imagine if Veals ordered 10,000 hooks from whatever factory/supplier they use, rather than 1,000, they would expect or be able to leverage a better rate?
Usually if you buy more of anything in volume the overall price reduces, right down to the point of retail?
I take the point if there’s not a big enough market to sell hooks etc 100 at a time then it might not make sense from a business point of view.

I can only go on my own experience but all I know is at one time I could buy the hooks etc I wanted in boxes of 50 or 100, which worked out cheaper than 10 packs of 10, enough that it was worth it ie £2-3 or whatever rather than pence.
Nowadays and for hooks especially, 25 seems to be the max for a lot of patterns.

I do btw want a lot of the hooks I use regularly, which is 6/0 or 3/0 Bigmouth Extras plus 3/0 Aberdeen and 1 or 2 Aberdeen.
The first two in particular seem hard to get in anything but 25s now.

There were a few eBay stores selling Varivas in boxes of 30 when I looked this morning, but no other branded hooks in greater quantities.

Would using a float be an option?

I switched to using a float (a spot I fish at for white bream, rocky and kelp all over) and no longer loose gear.
I don't think that would work with fishing for Huss and similar species which I think Tony often does. I don't target them, but guessing fairly big baits involved.

No, it’s gear straight in the rough stuff for the bottom feeders lol
Float will work there but not for Huss etc

Quantity discounts vary ... but you have to go way higher than 10000 if you want the sort of discounts you think people are somehow entitled to. Even then it isn't often much because the stuff sits around taking up space and that too costs money ... as before it still has to all be sorted and packed. And how many companies do you think could ride 10,000 of every bit of terminal gear they stock do you think? Your not in the real world to be honest .. does anybody comprehend the practicalities of that level of stock. It also has to be insured and I can assure you that can swallow up some of the "discount".

Has it occurred that there is a reason why the 25 pack is what you commonly see? It is because people like me have found that it is the more popular size and we cater for the majority.
I agree with your point, just speaking from experience. I've found quite often items are cheaper on eBay than elsewhere - it has happened a few times with consumable bits from Veals.
Even they seem to fall for that "sell at all costs" strategy on there (which is very poor business sense). A lot of sellers on Ebay (even many of the large, well established ones) are spending half their life selling for no profit which is madness. You are better not to sell than to not make anything because you save yourself the time and bother ... and that can be put into another area of your business (such as a website) which does make you a profit.

To be honest Ebay has been very harmful to the financial viability of a lot of companies and to business in general ... its bred a generation of consumers who resent any retailer making a fair profit (though the consumers expect to get paid well themselves) and who actually think that postage is free ... and I am not kidding ... I have had a good few ask why I charge postage on my website when its free on Ebay.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I did say I realised it might not make sense from a business point of view.
The numbers were just hypothetical ones to illustrate the point.
If it’s genuinely not viable from a retailer perspective then so be it.

However, as I said, from my personal experience there was a time when I could buy hooks in greater bulk than 25s or 10 packs, I can get through a lot more hooks than the once a month anglers.
I also know plenty of anglers who fish regularly and have similar usage.

But it seems that option is no longer available or viable in most cases, so c’est la vie.

And as I said ... I sell them ... and the 100 packs sit there and grow old, the 25 packs disappear at a steady rate. Its a no-brainer quite frankly.

What ones do you have available in 100s? I mentioned veals at the outset as I get through a lot of their Varivas Bigmouth Xtras, but I don’t know if other outlets sell them.
I do also get through various other hook patterns though.
I’ll have a browse through your site…

Varivas Bigmouth Xtras
Sakuma Manta look similar - there are 100 pack on this website BUT delivery is over £20 despite saying free UK delivery on orders over £15

I have always had free delivery from Sakuma when spending over £15

They are though I like the Manta Extra or whatever the thicker gauge ones are called.
I prefer the Varivas brand version of these because they bend more rather than snap, but the Sakuma ones are still on the whole decent hooks.

Cheers, I’ll have a browse through!

I don't know what I'm doing because it always comes up as over £20 for delivery - maybe I should fill out all the details (address etc) and right at the very end it'll adjust

You need to get to Specsavers. Top Left corner of most of the pages. "Free delivery over £15"

Last year I spotted Saul Page selling boxes of 100 kamasan uptide hooks. These are my favourite j hook, so I bought 100 2/0 1/0 and size 1. I wish they did them in smaller sizes, but the B940 pattern covers me from 2 down to 6.

I reckon I have enough terminal gear to last me the rest of my days.
With hooks I have over 2000 of size 2 to 6/0. Swivels I bought 2000 Berkeleys in a job lot a year ago.
I have a chest of drawers stuffed full of stuff, crates of line.
I do occasionally buy new stuff if I fancy it but I don't really need anything just fancy trying stuff.
I do agree though that you can buy from veals on eBay cheaper than you can from the veals website.
At the moment I have an eBay 10% off voucher and I just looked and it works on veals stuff!.
