Big leads are just a tool to get the job done.....with the right rods, they aren't too bad.
If i go to wales, its normally a 7oz im using, and thats probably on the light side for some marks.
Match your tackle to the conditions. 👍

Well it's a good job I don't need to use so much lead around here Si, would take all the fun out of fishing. But each to their own, and like you said, if you fish big fast tides and rough marks you need big leads, just not for me. 🎣

Big rods, big leads aren't as much fun, unless you're a big lad i guess, but id rather be catching than blanking 😁

A more powerful rod will cast a 7oz easily enough ....if needing an overhead thump, actually better than a lighter lead.

As always practice makes it easier.... generally start the cast slower with a bigger lead, is i believe the advice generally given. 👍

Any experienced Bristol channel anglers here , I will be doing a few trips this year and currently own TTGSM and find although they are rated to 200 grams they perform best with 150 and big bait or 170 and smaller baits. Would you use these in the channel or should I get something with a bit more grunt ? Local shop is recommending T900's as I will also eventually be fishing in Scotland as well.
I have a pair of TTSMG’s and they have handled everything the channel has thrown at them, large rays and conger up to 25lb. IMO they are perfect channel rods. I’ve also owned the t900’s but prefer my tornados by a country mile, such a better all round angling experience. I cast a good ray bait with 7oz no problem at all. On the rougher marks I just swap my 6500’s for sloshes. Job done 👍🏻

Welcome to the Madhouse Damo! 👍👍

I used to regularly fish St Thomas head, Ladye bay, rock ledges & Battery point, I've never used casting leads over 175g Gemini's, but I would sometimes use fixed wire grips, only time it was un fishable was 2+ hours in to the ebb on a big tide when it proper rips through.
I actually bought my 525 mags specifically for the BC with 18lb line, with the 6500's 15lb line, for south coast beaches.

I find a 6oz is fine but either side of the flood and ebb I need a 7. Battery Point and the MOD is the only place I’ll use an 8. Ladye bay nothing seems to hold and I quite often stop fishing for an hour if I’m on a long session
