Braid.

Hopefully the Mitchell will have goid line lay, not read much about them. Imho the more I read the more I am convinced that a reel with poor line lay causes 99% of wind knots.
I have freshwater shimano reels that i have fished braid on for many a long year and never had a windknot. That set up I use on a couple of okuma 8k surfs, never had an issue either so hopefully it will work for you this time round.
I do have a shimano speedmaster with power pro in 66lb straight through but it is a four strand braid and my only concern would be 8 strands abrasion resistance straight to to the rig?
I have not done that with 8 strand so no experience others may have. Fishing beaches may be less of an issues than the rock marks I fish though.
Sadly, no longer well enough for clambering about to Rock marks, so yes, mainly clean beaches, piers & jetties. Line lay seems fairly good on the Mitchell, but would only ever use it with Mono. Love my Penn Surfblaster and the line lay seems great. That's got 29Lb mono on it, but will try some Braid when I can find that elusive spare spool! 👍👍

I was wondering what breaking strain braid I should load on my soon to arrive Shimano 6000. No power casting needed or planned, just to use close in on surf, estuary or harbour fishing. Was thinking up to 30lb 8 strand. Don't want it too thick or thin . So figured 30 might suffice

20lb Powerpro.

Personally I find it too bloody sensitive in surf when bait fishing, feel every bit of wave and if you put the rod in a rest it never stops moving, does my swede in.

But to answer your question, I’d go about 30lb as 20 is very thin and it’s surprising (or perhaps not) how much abrasion you can get just from sand and mud.

Agreed - I hate braid for shore bait fishing. That's probably down to the ground, tides and weed conditions I fish. Love braid for lures, uptiding and lure fishing though😃 To me that's where it excels

I don’t lure fish really except from the boat but yes I can imagine it works well for that from the shore.

How does it benefit with uptiding though? Considering that’s all about letting the pressure on your bowed line anchor it to the seabed?

I guess braid would enable you to use somewhat lighter grippers? I’ve never tried it uptiding, I must admit.

I'm not sure what BS the Braid I tried on my surf reel was, but think about 30Lb. Endless wind knots and problems, so when I got my 3000 & 4000 Shimano spinning reels, I spooled half of the Braid on each. It's worked fine on them. Like you, never been keen on Braid for beach bait rods, but was going to give it another try if I can find that elusive spare spool.

Yes it's good for uptiding for that reason MrFish. On places like the Mersey in full flow I use 10oz uptiding leads with extra long fixed wires running on a 16ft wind on leader of 60lb+ mono (for abrasion resistance and the ability to handball fish up into the boat without the risk of braid cutting into hands)connected to 40lb JBraid 8x with a fg knot. Too much elasticity with a full mono set up for my liking and you need a fair bit more lead, stronger rod, bigger capacity reel etc

I don’t think I’ve ever used more than 8oz in the BC but I’d imagine the flow in the Mersey would be stronger, or at least comparable to the upper BC?

i fish the mersey a lot as local i get away with 4-5 oz leads wirral side when others beside me can not hold with 7 + wires bent well can hold a lot better than standard ones i have soft wires and stiff , i fish braid around or into rocks , mono on all open beach . got some 6-7 oz one a few weeks back they were sticking to the bottom like glue

Do you boat fish the Mersey JW? I agree with you completely on wire choices and setup. You can compare fishing at Otterspool on big tides to that of uptiding from a boat - you've got to get the lead setup right and cast it well up tide or it won't hold in a month of sundays. Not managed a session on the Mersey for a while but a mate of mine fished the flood on Tues/Wed and had 4 keepers to 3.5lb. I've had some good cod from the Mersey over the years, particularly onboard Size Matters, but am not that keen on fishing proms personally, I prefer fishing the LW on the open beaches at Cleveleys, Rossall etc where you get a sense of escape from the urban sprawl you leave behind you 😉

Daiwa J braid grand x8 is very good. Really smooth and very thin. It's very quiet through the eyes too.
I've used cheap Chinese 8 strand too without issue. But I will be replacing it with the Daiwa grand a I go along. Much nicer to use.

Mooching around on eBay this morning looking at J-Braid, and this guy's stock came up.
Loads of different brands of Braid, most of which I've never heard of, and up to 24 strand, and a few reels & other items too.

Personally I would only buy j braid from a reputable supplier. Too many fakes about. Might be worth a try for some of the cheaper Chinese brands.

Looking at his prices on some items his name must be Daley or Trotter

I did wonder about some of his prices, and a lot of the brands I have never heard of. His price for J Braid I thought was reasonable, but as FishAmaniac said, it may be fake.

Not sure that multi coloured J braid8x is genuine Trampster? All of mine have black markings every m and thicker double bands at every 10m colour change - if it's too cheap it often is a sign to be wary.....

Not sure sometimes either how somebody can have so many items for sale, especially new items, and still be a private seller. 🤔🤔

Haven't ordered any Braid yet, and won't be ordering from that store - waiting for my Chest to improve.
No point in ordering Braid if I'm not well enough to get out & use it.

I've got a couple of level wind multipliers that I was going to dig out and put some fresh line on in case I get an offer to go boating!
Cancelled the idea of putting Braid on them, and I'm looking at a spool of Rovex 10X. 👍👍

Ive got Daiwa J braid 8x multi colour on one of my spinning reels and didnt look anything like that on the spool i bought. Stay clear of that site would be my advice.
