I’m looking at getting either a Shakespeare Agility bass rod or the flattie rod for float fishing for gars and macs and scading at dusk in matches and was wondering wot size reel you guys whould use for such a setup I’ve got plenty of 10000 80000 and 7000 but nowt smaller guess my affinity 7000 whould be ok but a little bit unbalanced any suggestions budget around £60 to £80 wit ya think ma Bute’s

I'd use whatever has the line you want to use on it to get started. But if you're looking for something new then I'd prob look at the larger daiwa spinning reels such as the LT6000 In whatever model you find fits the budget, Exceler LT6000 for example can be had for £60 atm, or of the old generation of reels the Ninja 4000A (comes with spare spool).

Or maybe a 5k sized Shimano Sahara (front drag model), it's the same as the nasci without a number of seals. Nasci is a bit more pricy. But both have decent hagane gears. These will be quite small reels though so you'd be stuck with braid rather than mono on all likelihood.

6000 or 8000 Shimano DL baitrunner could be another option?

Bit more would get you a Penn battle 3? 4 to 5k size maybe, or a little extra again would get you a 4500 or 5500 Penn spinfisher.

Question is I guess what line are you intending to use? Then find a reel that is light enough but holds enough of your line of choice.

Penn reels around £80-100 are tough as old boots though, battle, spinfisher etc.

If you are float fishing why not get a 10ft spinning rod that casts up to 80gms, I have an Abu 174swi fs reel matched to it. the whole kit cost less that £75. Just a thought.

I actually like my Shimano Ultegra 5500 xtd on my bass rod. But covid has pushed prices for these from the sub £100 I paid to near £140...b@stards
Now you’ve started it I run with a pair of ultragras and now think the 5500 size whould look nice in me collection but I can’t put a£150 reel on a£50 rod can I ???maybe need to go a bit higher end ???

Gold plated would suit.

buy a cheaper reel then you won't feel guilty.

Thinking about it mate, if you mainly want the bass rod for float fishing it might be a bit overgunned. Will still be fine for the job but you might feel after a while that it’s a bit heavier than you want.
The flattie rod would probably be nearer the mark.

Mind you, if you also want the bass rod for flicking out a few feathers occasionally or some lighter ledgering once in a while, it’s definitely a better all rounder.

I’ve used lighter rods for float fishing but they can be a bit limited - sometimes you want something a bit longer and heavier to get the float out in the tide where the fish are.

Light is great fun if you’re playing around close in though.

As for reels, for float fishing I use what I think is about the 5000 size?
But if you wanted a bit of an all rounder for a bit of light beachcasting as well, it’s worth going a little bigger.

IMO I wouldn’t bother with braid for float fishing...

If it’s for fairly occasional use I don’t think I’d be too fussed about the reel, something around the £40/50 would be fine imo

That would be fine on clean areas like your beaches mate.
I use 15 and 10lb hook lengths but I float fish a lot around rocks and it’ll get snagged sooner or later so I want to be able to get my float back!

I have used braid with it and you can still fish, but I find it jerks the float back a lot and is also hard to judge when/how to set the hook.
And the thinner diameter/sensitivity doesn’t really offer any gains as far as float fishing goes...

Abu 174swi fs reel is 39.99 on flea bay delivered. Works well with mono on my 10ft fishing rod that cast up to 2.8ozs

Def mono for float fishing, mind you I only use mono for all fishing and works for me.

Forgot to add it comes with a spare spool, well it did when I brought mine.

I use a diawa ninja 4000a on a flattie rod
You get 2 spools,I filled one with mono for float fishing and one with braid for spinning and bait.
It’s my go to outfit most of the time?

I have mono on both my spools (174swi), one 8lb for mullet in the rivers and the other 12lb for mackerel etc.
