Hi all
I'm currently using a surblaster 3 and have an old ultegra as my 2nd reel and an akios fireloop as a backup, just in case reel. My ultegra reel could do with a good service and I plan on doing so, picked up some grease and lube after another post that helped me out. Someone in my club has also given me a Shimano biomaster 8000, I've never heard of them before, has anyone any experience with them?

Sorry, but no. I've got a couple of small (3000/4000) Shimano reels for lure fishing, but for beaachcasting, like you I stick with Surfblasters and a Mitchell Blue Water RZ8000.

Biomaster 8000 is a great reel and super reliable as long as you keep it clean.

There have been a few incarnations of the Biomasters. Which one have you got? Is it the GT ? The older GT models I have are the pretty ancient black graphite 'long cast' / 'big pit' style series from the late 90's (I think?) and as Pete points out these are not best suited to thin braids as the line lay and oscillation isn't as good as newer designs. The 2022 Biomaster SW 60000 PG models I use for casting lures in warmer waters are superb with braid.

I have Biomaster XT 12000s, the white ones, and they must be 30 years old and bulletproof. They handle braid just fine and you can fill them right up to the bottom of the spool lip bevel. Doubt if you will get any spare parts for them though.

Yes, I have a Biomaster 8000, now sits redundant on the shelf in the garage since I bought a couple of surfblasters several years ago. I bought it second hand off that auction site, quite like the fact it is smaller than some 8000 size reels. It came with a 7000 size spare spool and I happily used it for a few years with no complaints.
