Does anyone use float fishing rods in the sea? My floats tend to be 150mm and weighted for 35gm, matched with a 20-80gm rod. Also a 174swi size coffee grinder or an Abu Silver Max multi.

Hiya Beach,
I do a bit of floatfishing for Mackerel, Gars, pollack & Wrasse with either a 1-3oz Bass rod or a 2.5lb tc Pike rod & anything between a 3000 & 4500 f/spool reel.
I use the usual cigar floats but depending on tide & wind anything upto an ounce & a half cocking weight.
Rick?

I have tried bubble floats in the river for mullet, heck of a job to see them when they go downstream with the current more than 20yds.

why not use river trotting floats can see them a long way away . can set them up to fish most waters

Used to float fish for gars a while ago. Great fun, but they seem to have disappeared with the mackerel from this part of the coast. Used the same old 12ft rod I used for general fishing.

Apparently plenty off the west wall at Brighton Marina last summer.

light coarse rod if can get away with the light rods
but all round prefer a carp rod as bit more length to get the line above the waves and also strength to pull up a decent fish unless your at water level ...
also find it helps set hooks better rather than striking a light spinning rod that just bends

I’ve used all sorts. Spinning rod, carp rod, currently using a Shakespeare Tidewater flattie rod that I didn’t like using in the estuary as it was a bit too floppy but it’s okay as a float rod.

I tend to use sliding sea floats carrying up to an ounce as they are more controllable.
A lighter float is lovely if the conditions are right but they rarely are, in my experience.
Plus most rock marks I fish you need to whack it out a bit to get past the rocks and into the tide run. Add a bit of wind and current to that and 1/4 or 1/2oz floats just can’t cut it.

Use a couple of coarse rods for mullet ( sistar traverse x match and shakespeare avon0 if conditions allow with chubber floats. 11 foot Teklon concept in rougher conditions or with small blenny/butterfish or prawn livebaits, usually with self cocking pike floats. Larger joey sized live baits with a custom ABu pike rod with a home spliced glass tip usinfg large bubbles

I generally like to use a light uptider rod while float fishing . I find a carp rod sometimes dosnt have the nessesary umph needed to pull out of the kelp .

That’s a good shout. I use an up tider sometimes for light touch ledgering for bass off the rocks. Could use anything, to be fair, but the uptider isn’t too long so easy to carry and light enough.
Did use my bass rod but need to get a new tip ring for it, lol, along with about eight other rods that need doing!

Tip rings usually only take 10-15 minutes Fishy! I did one on a Spinning rod recently. Blakdog has got a good selection.
