...is expensive! šŸ˜ž

I'm having to do a warranty claim and (initially) I have to cover the cost of sending the rod back. A quick look at prices - quotes are over Ā£30  - which to me seems obscene because although the package is long it will easily fit in most vans and is not difficult to carry around.

What experience have your guys had?

If you think it's obscene get in your car & deliver it yourself, ;) !!
It's not just about the vehicles, they don't go through the sorting machines, so have to be manually processed

ParcelForce48 size limit for a tube is 3m length & girth combined, up to 5kg is about Ā£14.
I use plastic gutter down pipe as a tube.

Also check what insurance/compensation the service has, I think fishing rods only get the basic level if lost or damaged, even if you pay extra for enhanced level

I've no idea why, but the carriage of fishing rods has got ridiculously high in recent years.
I was looking at a good 2nd hand rod on eBay which was cheap but collection only.
Asked matey if he could get a price to send it to me and he came back with over Ā£40, which was near twice the price of the rod.

Are you sure? Because when I have a look on ParcelForce's website (using package dimensions of 170x10x10cm) it automatically gives me the express48large option for over Ā£40 šŸ˜ž

I purchased two zzipies over the last two weeks, one from Newcastle the other from Middlesbrough, both were sent by UPS next day delivery, they were in 8' tubes and cost me Ā£35 each time. Bargain if you consider a round trip by car would be several hours each way and the cost of fuel as well.

Ian.

Interparcel...
Parcel2go...

I've tried these websites already - the problem is this 3 piece rod is 158cm packed down, then add bubble rap etc plus plastic tube and it comes to 170cm long, and as soon as you put in 170cm it says "...give me your money..."

If it was 150cm I'd be fine as the cost suddenly drops down to ~Ā£15 but 1cm over and it jumps up to over ~Ā£35 (without insurance)

Iā€™ve got 2 rods to go to a rod builder ,I was quoted Ā£90 delivery by ups , so Iā€™m taking them my self by car and itā€™ll be nice to go out for the day and I can pop in to my daughters for a couple of hours during the trip , it means a 8 hour round trip

Register as a trade user, takes minutes with no proof required, you can then pick from a variety of carriers and sort your own insurance to suit you etc.

Used to cost around Ā£27 to send 3 big game rods in tubes or boxes to Italy or Algarve. Salmon rod to Alaska, in tube about 1.6mtrs x 100cm dia was around Ā£32 and was there in 36hrs.

UPDATE: I'm a jammy mofo - I contacted the original supplier (Uttings) to let them know of my predicament, and asked if I could use their delivery service (and they charge me an amount for doing so) and they said OK!

I'm very grateful - rod is getting picked up on Monday for Ā£10 :)

Got that wrong chap
Really ?
NEVER buy Royal Mail or Parcelforce services from P2G or other middle men on the cheap because they have their own T's&C's with much lower compensation rates than buying from RM or PF themselves (P2G-Ā£25, PF48 Ā£150 basic)

If it has 3 dimensions (height depth width) it's a box NOT A TUBE, a tube is only length x diameter  ;)

Fine BUT read your screen grab - it says that for rolled and cylinder-shaped items, the length of the item plus twice the diameter must not exceed 104cm. The greatest dimension should be no more than 90cm, so when it comes to a rod you have no option but to use the express48large for over Ā£40 šŸ˜ž

just used them twice this past couple of weeks and both times Ā£44 . and a few pennies with Ā£150 insurance

Not quite, have sent tens of dozens of tubes with post office. Normally smaller fly rods, 3 / 4 section. It is calculated by the length of the tube x twice its` diameter not exceeding 104cms. Maximum length of any dimension must not exceed 90cms. Most other on line carriers require you to input length x width x height. If you don`t the on line booking will not accept your order. So if it is 2mtr x120mm tube (a normal rod one) then you have to put in length, 2mtr, width120mm, height 120mm even if you don`t like the idea, the computers do. What about a Kiss or Bazooka rod tube, they are square (app) so have length, width and height but they are sold as tubes.
