With the Species Hunt drawing to a close I thought I'd try for something small and unusual along the harbour walls at Weymouth.
It needed to be a short session, I was away late and would need to leave by about 8:30pm to avoid the fog banks that roll in on the high ground on the way home.
It was a pleasant dry and calm evening but low tide limited the fishing spots, I managed to catch the usual pout, pollack, whiting and some black gobies.
One tiny bite resulted in this small and unusual creature hooked on a scrap of gar.

I should have taken it out to the end of the Stone Pier where, according to reports of those coming back from there, plenty of squid were being caught on artificial versions.
As I was about to pack up another gentle bite resulted in an unequal struggle on light tackle with another bloody conger that I got to the surface but which made off with the hook to save me the bother of unhooking it.
The weather report is a bit dire for the remaining few days before the competition ends although there might be a small window of opportunity for another species in the last few hours of the year.
