Fancied a chuck for an early plaice so headed to Brighton with son Steve. Arrived about 2 hours before high to be greeted by big swells and a murky sea, not anticipated and certainly not desirable. Few small whiting showed, then a small plaice and dab to Steve. High tide passed and we agreed to give it another half hour. Had a nice drop back bite to one of my rods, but no hook up. Encouraged, I rebaited and sent it back out. Glanced at my rods and slack line hung from the tip of the rod I’d just sent out. Expecting the lead had tripped, I was surprised to feel a few healthy kicks, certainly not a plaice. Two minutes later a fat healthy bass slid up the shingle.

By no means a monster but good to feel something that pulled back. Fished on for a while for a just sizeable plaice (target species achieved) and a schoolie each, then home beckoned. Cheers for now, Bob.
