First post in a good while for me but as title suggests I headed to highcliff in Dorset for an evening session. I'd seen a report of a Ray being caught at the weekend and with other reports suggesting many parts of the south coast fishing slowly i thought I'd try for myself. Went to the local tackle shop before hand and was told there had been a few thornbacks caught the previous night and was well worth a go.
So armed with sandeel, squid and a few ragworm I headed to highcliff to fish the flood. Rods were out an hour into the flood with a 3 hooked clip rig on one with ragworm and a bar rig with sandeel/squid on the other. Both rods getting rattles straight away and a double shot of a pouting and a rockling on the 3 hooked rig first cast. Rebaiting every 15mins and whilst baiting the 3 hooked rig after the 4th cast my reel on the other rod started to have line pulled from it and rod bent round. Started winding it in and felt next to no weight until getting it to the surf where it held bottom for a bit and then with a steady pull I pulled a small thornback up the sand. Happy with that, first ray of the year albeit a small one of no more than 3lb. I was hoping that would see a few more but not to be with rockling and pouting getting to baits pretty instantly. One dogfish between the numbers of pout saw me pack up on high tide with no bait left. Nice to be out and to bag a few fish.
Hopefully get out for some plaice fishing next time. Screenshot_20250214_170349_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20250212_204103_Gallery.jpg

Great report mate, nice little Thornie too. Good effort. 🎣 🎣

Ian.

Back in the late 70s we used to almost exclusively fish with pout for rays at Highcliffe and Hordle.
I would often go to Southbourne 1st to get the pout because once the ray were in you wouldn,t get them.
Maybe the rays have changed their appetite but I would try it next time.
