This is not a braving the weather post. Its much heavier than that!
Sat 21.09 Haddock.
Horrid weather next week. I think I'll fish Boscomber Pier on Monday to use up my worms, looks like the best of a bad job. Fish the tide up from 3pm.
Mon 09.08 Goateeblank.
See you on the pier.
Mon 09.09. Haddock.
That's a bit brave out fishing on Valentines Day... Respect!!!
Goateeblank, thinking, shit, shit,shit.
Says to wife. I'll stay in today if you want me to.
Her reply. No that's ok, as long as we can take the cats to the vet, go to B&M and Dunelm!
Goateeblank. Yup no problem.
Result!
Mon 10.05. Goateeblank to Haddock.
"He who dares."
Anyway that was the plan and that's what we did!
I was first on the pier and got the spot we wanted with the pier weather protection structure behind, holding off the wind. I had decided to use fish baits. Sardine from Morrisons and mackerel left over from West Bay, as donated by Haddock and not refrozen. Main dream target was a brill. Tried to get fresh worms (l had a few left overs) and none available from the shop, so my plan went ahead.
3 hook flappers plopped out and rods bungeed on and went to say hello to a few guys. My friend Richard had already had pout and whiting, plus a small eye, a turbot and a brill, so that gave me some confidence. He is a top angler, as the rest of the rods there were blanking or just whiting.
Haddock turned up and set up. Told him the news. Regular whiting and pout, with a fish after every bait change. I saw a gentle pull down on the rod. I left it as the other one had something that was a bit more urgent on it, which turned out to be a whiting and pout double shot. Re-baited and out it went. Lifted the other rod and wound down a bit, lifted and yes some weight and its not a whiting. Kept a steady pressure on the line and when it broke the surface I can see its something flat. As it got closer to the pier I can see its a small ray, which lifted up and over the pier rails no problem. Its an undulate ray and it is also my second ever undulate ray and gave me my 24th species this year. Well happy.
Always wanted to do one of these ray eye pictures. It also shows the spikes on its body.
The ray was lowered back into the water with Haddocks drop net which got a bit of a caning as Richard had 3 smooth hounds and three conger over the night. The last one was too big for the net, so he had to walk it to the beach lifting his rod over each of the pier lamps. He managed that ok and when it was on the beach, it shed the hook!
More whiting and pout and then a better bite. Again I could see it was another flat fish and it was my target a brill. To say I was happy is an understatement, plus it got me up to 25 species.
I am now really hoping for a turbot to give me a proper good night, but it was not to be. I did get a small plaice (had a few this year) and think I lost a smooth hound.
It went a bit quiet, so we packed up sometime after 9 and headed home. Haddock had the usual plus a doggie and just as I was about to put it back, he stopped me to double check his list, but he has already had one.
Good night, in between the bad weather, not cold, bit of excitement landing and returning Richards fish. Good to watch Haddocks skills getting them into the net with the congers going in tail first, my second ever undulate and the target a brill.
Now waiting for another weather window!
Good luck people.
