When fishing from the beach/shore, what casting distance have you found catches most fish.
Other than the third wave I have found 40 to 60yds to be the most productive where I fish. 100yds+ isn't so productive for me.

I was always told on a surf beach , cast one out far as you can then cast the other one at various distance, in the dark on a bass beach 20-40 yards is good . Read leaky boots book (the song of the solitary bass fisher ,) a brilliant book gives loads of good advice all about bass angling

On a surf beach almost all my stuff is in close, but then I’m targeting bass, although the same applies for BC sole beaches.
If I wanted ray, more distance would be necessary but even then we get them on our surf beaches at 40-80 yards.

Certainly the likes of chesil and the channel reefs needs a better chuck, ideally.

But as said, all depends on the venue

As been said Venue.species.time of day.Weather and much more.
Been to some places like Deal way short cast works while others as far as can plus more is needed.
When fished Brighton other week only plaice was at max range tried short for nothing.
Bass are often short as there ambushing prey.
While Sole and plaice are where the Mussel beds are or worm.

But if can't cast to save your life? well your Shite outta luck if fish are at distance while if you can cast well you can always cast short!

Sorry.
I can not answer because I am not an expert ?
If you want an answer from a non expert, then I can do that ?

When we blank Shirl we are all non-experts. Your input is always appreciated. ;)

@jackjock has pretty much nailed the answer.
You need to cast to the features.

I was referring to where I fish, other peeps fishing areas/beaches do fish at different distances to find fish.

In hove all my big fish have come from the gutter , bass ,cod ,end of gone area ,Ray's 50 to 80 yards out ,sole in the surf, plaice no great distance needed as long as not in the surf, conger have cought them 20 yards out

A good majority of my catches are in the 30 to 80 bracket, couple venues I fish are around the 100 mark and one is around the 5ft mark!
Jackjock got it spot on, only thing ill add is to learn to cast to 100 plus because if the fish are at that distance then you hopefully can catch them, easy to cast shorter if needed.
