All the best lads.
In my last thread I said I was going for a 60cm bass.
I didn't go with the lures as from out of nowhere the forecast was showing northerly wind up to 52 mph so I waited till they dropped off. Last night was the opportunity. My mate Dan phoned me to say he was going at the bandstand on the inside of the heugh breakwater at Hartlepool at 8 o'clock. I can't fish this mark as it's covered in seaweed and boulders and holes everywhere and one slip or twist my knee would be fecked, so I headed to the Middleton pier about half a mile across the bay and easy access.
As I was going on the pier two lads were walking off saying no cod but there's been whiting caught all day over 2lb. As I was walking to the end the puddles were starting to ice up, so carefully made it to the end. Low water at 23.30. Baits were cart squid and blacks.i had the whole pier to myself .
The temp was dropping rapidly I think about 2am it dropped to minus 5 according to my. Phone and my fingers were telling me the same. I had had nothing up till then not even a bite or the whiting the lads going off had mentioned. A big cart wing and squid bait was chucked out and rod rested I was trying to defrost my fingers, It was that cold it was so painful on my fingers tips. Out came my electric hand warmers from Amazon, Custard bought me for Christmas after ten mins I could start to feel them again. Not long after I got a bite not a big bite but a bite I let it develop and then bang bang, on the rod tip classic cod bite struck into it and fish on got it to my feet a codling just over 2 1/2lb. I normally put these back as I prefer them 3 lb or over but after been there freezing I wanted to something to show for my efforts and prove t custard I'm not messing about while I'm out .Shortly after that I got one just over a pound returned him safely and a pinwhiting returned. It got to 0300 and I decided to rap in I was freezing I managed to phone Dan as I could still see his light flashing on and off now and again he had 5 codling the biggest at 5lb 4. He said he lost a bigger one to a snag on his second cast. I got back in the house for 03.30 hence the late report. This is going to go great with chips and peas later.
I was going to go back out tonight but I've got a darts match to play, so could be back out tomorrow somewhere before I'm back at work on Monday. The cod hunt continues till then you lot have fun.
