Traditional clam beds in silty areas bordering on to sand ideal, about up to a good forks depth deep with a blow hole not unlike razor clam but in silt harder at times to detect and easy to dig.I've never tried them either, and wouldn't have a clue where to find some.
That's me out then! Not well enough to go "forking Silt" and there haven't been any Cod caught here that I'm aware of for many a year.Traditional clam beds in silty areas bordering on to sand ideal, about up to a good forks depth deep with a blow hole not unlike razor clam but in silt harder at times to detect and easy to dig.
Estuaries can be a good place towards the Seaward end and grow to a good size, most beds close to higher population of people been dug out now and ever increasingly harder to find as have a value.
Suspect but not certain slow growing as clam beds can be easily decimated by over digging.
Good cod bait when sea running.![]()
Still buy them though and was curious as to how the fished further south or even rated excepting some species will eat most things if in the mood, would imagine a good surf bait for bass like razors. That's me out then! I've used them a bit and gapers. Not bad bait on their day. Bass and flounder take them. Plenty of both localStill buy them though and was curious as to how the fished further south or even rated excepting some species will eat most things if in the mood, would imagine a good surf bait for bass like razors.
Just curious if used very much.
Never really fished them till about fifteen years ago due to having some given and that year in one area were mustard for the cod where self and friends used to fish but was a good season in general coupled with clams been brought into the area from elsewhere so more using. Anyhows from then on went on quest and dug my own and have ever since and good to freeze and bulk out other bait. Think on their day a very good way to see it and worth using if available and free.I've used them a bit and gapers. Not bad bait on their day. Bass and flounder take them. Plenty of both local
I've always collected bait since being a kid, my old man did as well. A big part of fishing I think. We used to use a big old bait pump for them. Easy pickingsNever really fished them till about fifteen years ago due to having some given and that year in one area were mustard for the cod where self and friends used to fish but was a good season in general coupled with clams been brought into the area from elsewhere so more using. Think sometimes gathering own bait more rewarding than fishing as last season cod wise was dire for me even using best of baits.
Depending on where you live can see collecting bait been harder with more protection zones been put in place, black lug beds used to dig as kid nothing like they were and not worth the effort even on the lowest of tides unless wanting a few and more headlamps on night tides looking for casts, sign of the times in some places.I've always collected bait since being a kid, my old man did as well. If you had to pick one bait only ( not that you would out of choice) for decent bass what would you limit self to in your neck of the woods.?I've always collected bait since being a kid, my old man did as well. A big part of fishing I think. We used to use a big old bait pump for them. Easy pickings
