South West No need to go to sea...

Comrades, I have turned my pathetic attempt at videoing into a YouTube video called Conger battle on the Tamar. It goes blank part-way through but I haven't got to grips with editing yet. Lasts just over a minute. Enjoy! PH

    Spools interchangeability between models.....

I use a Quantum Drive 30 for bass lure fishing and was delighted to find that many parts including the spool are interchangeable with the Quantum Throttle 30 which it replaced. PH

North Wales Just not the same as congering.

Both of those places are pretty fierce especially on the ebb. Brave diving! Yesterday I was tied to a buoy just below the ferries on the Torpoint side and the two mooring buoys uptide of me were completely submerged by the speed of the current. Once a decent conger gets downtide of you and...

North Wales Just not the same as congering.

Conger in the Tamar is something we in Plymouth just take for granted. It's a perfect combination of deep water (well over 100ft in places so unaffected by cold), resident and seasonal baitfish, a contoured bottom offering places to hide and hunt plus no commercial fishing. The ones caught by...

    CIRCLE HOOKS

I think where people have problems with hooking up on circles is the way they were designed to work. The idea is that you give line, allow the fish to turn and swim away and then tighten, snagging the fish in the corner of the jaw. Striking quickly, or using rigs which do not allow the fish to...

Pity you can't travel to Plymouth. See my South West England report today! PH

    CIRCLE HOOKS

I use a circle as the top hook on my gilt (worm) pennells. I tried them for conger but dropped a lot of fish till I realised why. Conger don't always turn and swim off with the bait like other fish. They back away so the circle, particularly an inline one, never gets the chance to set in the...

South West No need to go to sea...

The video came out but I don't seem to be able to post it on here. I'm not very technical! PH

South West No need to go to sea...

Hard to say as I never weigh eels or have them in the boat, but both were about 6ft long and very thick. In the twenties? I have had bigger in the river. PH

Yes I got some shaky footage but I can't seem to upload it here. If you are on WhatsApp send me a message on 07941 427341 and I will send you the video. PH

South West No need to go to sea...

...to get your string pulled by a big fish! The Tamar is famed for heavy conger, and two came my way in a four-hour uptiding session this morning, just downstream from the Torpoint ferries. I fished three rods: a downtider with a legered live pout, a light uptider with two-hook flapper for...

    South West Crack!

An eventful trip in my boat this morning as I somehow managed to snap 8" off the tip of my beloved HTO Nebula spinning rod. It doesn't owe me anything, as I've had it several years and it's had a lot of use and plenty of fish, but still a sad occasion. Hopefully I can source a new top section...

South West At the risk of boring you...

...I had six more mackerel today from West Hoe Pier in Plymouth, two of them big chunky ones that really put a bend in my light float rod. Also helped a nice couple and their friend who were fishing with hopeless rigs and supermarket prawns catch their first mackerel. Their joy was really...

South West Still a few about!

I have been fishing big baits in the Tamar but it has gone quiet recently apart from whiting. I'm sure the pier would produce a big bass eventually if you spent enough nights sitting quietly with a big fish bait such as a mackerel head and guts dropped down the side. PH

Not today but I had one three days ago, same venue. PH

South West Still a few about!

Catching mackerel on light float gear is so much more fun than feathering. These four came in a couple of hours this afternoon from Plymouth's West Hoe Pier. 15 minutes' walk from home... PH
