Hi All,

I would really appreciate some help with this please

I'm after a new pair of rods and have been looking at Zziplex M4GT and the AFAW Tournament Match Pro

I'm based in Sussex and fish predominantly clean to mixed ground beaches but also venture all I've from Kent to Dorset where I fish rougher stuff and I'm after an all rounder that will become my main pair of rods for the majority of my fishing

I've owned a variety of rods over the years including Century TTSM, Zziplex HSM, Conoflex Source and Daiwa AWB's all of which have been really nice fishing rods, which is what I'm after again, a nice easy to use fishing rod that won't be overkill on my local beach scratching around but also handle the big stuff when it's needed ... I'm using Daiwa Z Surf 12'6 rods at the moment with reel up which are spot on but I'm looking to switch back to reel down again hence one of the reasons for looking for a new pair

One of the reasons i'm switching back to reel down is to try and improve my distance, I feel I've hit my max with the reel up in the more suited shorter rod but need to get to grips with a full pendulum reel down to get those extra yards so it's important my new rods don't punish me to much if I hit a mis-timed cast, I tend to cast quick and need to try and slow it down a bit to so thinking what the difference between the glass tip of the M4 to the carbon tip of the TMP may have with that?

I want them to be enjoyable to use without having to get everything exact to get the best out of it at first, obviously the more I use them the more comfortable they'll become but you know what I mean? ... so a nice easy to use all rounder, what do you think?

Thank you, Tommy

hello tom ,, i went through the same thing , brought a m4gt could not stand it ,i just have this thing about glass tipped zippys ,hate them, i moved it on mega quick at a small loss , iv now a t800 and a j-curve mega happy with them both ,t800 casts a dream 5oz big bait or 6oz small bait , incredable bite detection can cast down or up butt and can use a fixed spool on it , the j-curve is a lovely slim rod all carbon tip good for 6oz big bait again can be used with fixed spool and braid ,iv used both rods for chesil with out a single problem , if i need to cast much bigger weights into heavy ground then the harrison q3 comes out along side the komp ss, ,my mate uses the afaw tournament match pro and gets on with it great knocks out a lead fair old distance good bite detection on it , iv had a couple of casts with it and found it a nice rod , if you want you can borrow my t800 and j-curve to see what they like

HI Mike, thanks for the offer to try the t800 I may very well take you up on that and have a few casts with it, it is one of the rods I was looking at but concerned it was going to be a bit on the stiff side

Welcome to the forum bud, like Mike i couldn`t get on with the m4gt,sold mine on and went back to using ttsm (non graphic) and my afaw match pro,at 13.7 this bends well with an overhead thump which is all i can do nowdays.I did try the tournament match pro but found it too long for my liking...Alan

HI Alan, really good to hear from you, yeah the boys are growing up fast mate ... I've still been fishing (although hardly at all last year) just been away from the forums etc but this seems a return to the good old days of wsf here

if you're after a pair I'd definitely try get a go before making your mind up bit of money if you get it wrong I've not owned a afaw but had a few casts of the tournament match pro nice enough rod I've always liked ziplex but let my gt go when I got the ttsm graphex the ziplex is still a powerful rod once you get past the tip still needs a bit of winding up to get the best out of it try and get a go of what you've mentioned but take a look at the ttsm graphex they are some of the best user friendly rod out very fast recovery lighter than the rest still all the power your going to need
Thanks grinner, I'll have more of a look at the newer TTSM, I had the original versions but they were just stiff do the majority of our fishing in Sussex, I do like the lightest rod possible for the type of fishing I'm doing, often take a bass rod and ledger for hounds for instance ... I also had a peek at the T800 and T900 which I'd like to have a cast with

Some nice kit being recommended above! I guess we'll all have our favourites and it really is a case of trying to find whats dead right for your fishing and casting style. For my fishing with big pennel worm baits, the m4gts came alive reel down with 175g and felt just a tad like overkill unless the sea was raging with tide and wave. Because of the topography here - miles of mostly shallow sloping sand and a 10m+ tidal range - I'll often be wading with my tripod set up in knee/waist depth water, so reel down isn't always the best option if it's a 'slappy' sea as the reels can get drowned. So I went back to my almost ancient FZero's that are happy reel up or down with 150g and with the scope to step up to 175g for the odd time it's needed. I was on a quest for a holy grail set up, threw a load of cash at it and soon realised that in practice it wasn't better than what I was trying to replace ! It's just those 8ft tips that are both a blessing and a curse!

Totally agree, done the same for years chasing that perfect rod ,I keep going back to my t-zeros after spending 1000s over the years on different rods only to realise I've always had them
