Boat 39 and a half lbs, ground fishing off Newhaven in January 1980. Best of a a 5 cod catch weighing thick end of 100 lbs - strange thing was, no-one else on the boat had one! The largest was weighed at the Peacehaven Angler, but not until about 6 hours after it was caught - would have easily weighed well over 40, judging by the amount of fluid swilling around in the fish box.

Shore 19lbs, Dengemarsh ( near Dungeness) sometime in the 1980’s, on a bright sunny late autumn day. Fished that area regularly from the late 1970’s until the early 2000’s. I have had many doubles in the 11 - 15 lbs range and have inevitably lost some really big fish, one of which spat a completely descaled whiting of nearly 2lbs when within yards of the beach. No bite marks or chunks missing, so definitely a large cod.

Sadly, those days are long gone, real novelty to catch a cod of any size now. Last reasonable one I had was on Chesil, (see avatar) 8lbs, although thinking about it, that was probably about 10 years ago.

Cheers for now, Bob.
