Widewater has been on my radar for a few weeks and having seen a few reports of early codling being caught this week I decided this week to make it my desired venue to fish. Last week the friday traffic was horrendous on leaving work so a sneaky half day (don't tell the boss) was in order and hours drive from work was soon completed and with mote than enough time to chill out before the near midnight high. So after a nice takeaway I hit the beach around 8pm to find it pretty busy, though did manage to get a groin to myself with the groin to my right having 5 anglers in (I'm guessing that's where the codling came from). Armed with just frozen baits (black lug, squid, sandeel) the first cast was sent out, lug' tipped with squid on a 2 hook clipped scratching rig. The second rod a pulley dropper loaded with a lug and squid wrap hoping for a codling. Well the scratching rod was soon rattling away and a 27cm bream was soon coming up the shingle. Similar to my selsey session last week the bites were coming thick and fast. Bream rattles aplenty, also a few double shots the first being a beam and boot lace conger. This was soon followed by a bream/ pouting double and then a bream/plaice double. The bigger bait was also being stripped but no hook ups. After an hour down the other anglers had all but disappeared with the odd headlight seen towards shoreham, maybe the bites would soon stop I thought, but they didn't. The big rod finally had a good pull down and i start winding to feel some good head shakes. Now I've never had a codling but I've heard people say about head shakes from cod so I was keeping my fingers crossed. It wasn't to be though but it was a feisty conger of 5lb 03oz, I've not had many of these so it was a pb. I fished til 2am , so 3 down and decided to call time though I was still getting bites although a lot less than earlier. Final tally was 14 bream (biggest 29cm), 3 pouting, 2 conger and 1 plaice.20210820_235114.jpg20210821_005247.jpg20210821_012045.jpg 20210820_212344.jpg
