A north easterly wind was forecast so fishing West Bay eastern arm would mean more comfortable fishing with the wind from behind.
I arrived at about six and could see shoals of bait fish dashing about and breaking the surface at the base of the wall, I put on a string of size 16 sabikis and, such is the way of things, by the time I'd sorted it the fish had cleared off. I set up a float to see if there were any mackerel or anything more exotic feeding on them and by the time that was sorted the bait fish were back and were easy to catch. Nothing was interested in the float fished bait so I amused myself catching the bait fish which turned out to be Sprats, I caught about 50 to vac pack and freeze.
There's always something to see when you are fishing, the salty sea dog out sailing or a lad thinking about jumping down off the wall onto the platform and breaking a leg like someone did recently.
As the light faded the scad turned up and a couple of mackerel were caught, one on float under the opposite wall and one by a chap using a dexter wedge. When it was dark I swapped to bottom fishing, I used to always put some lumi beads on the trace when I fished matches here but hadn't bothered since but I thought I'd see what they'd attract.
It turned out to be Pout mainly but a surprise 30cm Sole too along with Scad and small Pollack.
I got bored with Pout at about 11pm so packed up, as I left another angler who'd just arrived said he'd caught 'a nice little Blonde Ray here last night'
Perhaps I should have stayed longer, species hunting is a frustrating business.
