Anyone on here target them successfully and if so what's your preferred rig and bait ? My local shop recommends heavy nylon rather than wire to the hook, others recommend a pennel rig . Would like to try and avoid deep hooking if possible so thinking a big circle hook to heavy nylon via a crimped loop ?

Used to get my share some years ago off the West shore of Loch Ryan. Used an Abu 484, Abu 7000 reel to 25lb mono. End gear was a simple running ledger with approx 4ft of 150lb mono. No circle hooks then just used a 6/0 Seamaster or Sea Demon

Nothing complicated.
As Stan said or clip down pulley if distance is required.
Circle hook is the way to go.

Have caught a 25lb one by shear luck while fishing for rays , size. 4/0 on a 40lb trace ‘ made the old heart pump for a while and it was caught in a area which had no previous history of tope ?
