Started with an early-ish session last Sunday morning, stunning morning with the shoreline rammed with baitfish and the occasional signs of something bothering them. Eventually, got hit on a Patchinko 125 500G, great scrap and got the fish to the foot of the rocks. Stunning silver flanks and a lovely blue tinge to the fins, went to lift her up and she shook the hooks free ?‍♂️ Ironically, I’d only posted on a Facebook forum that week that I’d been toying with the idea of a net for marks like this as up to that point I’d been fairly lucky and not lost any fish whilst trying to land them! ? Though I gave it a good go it proved to be the only bit of action that morning.

Tuesday evening and a return to the same mark, still lots of baitfish around but very quiet and my first bit of action wasn’t until I nailed a seagull at maximum distance ? bugger took an age to get in and fortunately as I went to lift it up to where I was stood it freed itself, looked like the braid had only wrapped around it and luckily no hooks had penetrated it. With the usual Mishna and topwaters not producing I turned to a lure I rarely use the IMA Hound, this produced a handful of mackerel which i quickly got fed up with and called an end to the night’s fishing.

Thursday night I headed out again but this time a different venue in mind. Started OTT with the small patch and 3rd cast watched as the lure was tailgated to within feet of the shore. Hoping this was a good sign it was an hour later before my Mishna was stopped in its tracks on the retrieve. A decent scrap in the tide she went 58cm on the tape before a quick pic

5-10min later the Mishna is halted in its tracks again but this time a much smaller fish.

Hoping things were about to pick up an hour passed with no interest whatsoever in the lures and despite alternating between a handful of different SP’s and colours at midnight I’d decided that was enough and headed back towards the car.

A little deflated with my weeks efforts but all round I can’t be too disappointed with how my season is going so far.

On a separate note, what’s others opinions on fishing marks that are rammed with baitfish?
These were all around 2-3” in length there was definitely Launce and Mackerel in the area too. I’ve noticed, when there’s so much food source around a particular mark it fishes very poorly on the lures, not sure why I went back on Tuesday if I’m honest. The water was thick with them as far as the eye could see, huge shoals which you would consider good but prove otherwise. I suppose when there’s so much on the menu it’s a job to get your bit of plastic noticed, and though I did manage to get one on Sunday and lost it at my feet it was the only hit in nearly 4hrs, the baitfish never left the area.

Oh, and after Sunday I’m still toying with the idea of a net too! ?

Great report. Shame about the lost fish, but it is a good excuse to treat yourself to a net now.

It’s definitely on the cards, especially if I can find one that’ll sit on the sling bag without hampering the fishing.

Cracking report mate, well done on the bass. Ever considered wether fly fishing could be an option? Small fry imitations to match the hatch as it were?
Always toyed with a fly setup but never got around to buying one or trying a mates who said I could.
Maybe something I’ll look at properly down the line.
