They’re out there & they’re underrated
So first post for a while having opted to spare you from my trials & tribulations of chesil over the winter but thought the following worth a mention.
Having spent week in week out of the winter fruitlessly waiting for the holy grail of fish (& chips) to double my rod tip around many a blank was saved by amongst others a few welcome doggies. Not everyone’s cup of tea I know.
However on a recent trip it was clear something a bit more sporty had taken a liking to this weeks offerings & it wasn’t keen to join me on the big beach. After a good tussle I was joined by what first appeared to be a giant dogfish. It’s a bull Huss I hear you cry! and a quick check on British sea fishing confirmed this so what threw me, the colour, the ones I have previously caught from a different venue, have been much darker I believe their habitat affects this. After a bit of a fight to get said beast into a tesco carrier bag for weighing, well half of it, my spring balances showed just over 4. A quick jaunt to some neighboring anglers confirmed the species & they kindly took some photos, cheers guys. The fish was estimated to be around 3.5 feet long.
So this fish was well behaved and only once took a nibble at my coat which was nothing in comparison to its relative whom I was to meet a week later.
This guy really didn’t want to come in and on joining me spent the entire time doing that dogfish thing of wrapping around your arm and twisting about gnashers at the ready.
This one wasn’t going to fit in the bag but I managed to fashion a sling and the old spring balance cranked up a 5. Hold on that’s kg I’m looking at that’s 11lb this is my first double since starting beach fishing & last weeks would have been 9lb.
So if you want a smooth hound style scrap and like me, you can’t get a fiddly worm on a fiddly hook let alone 3 hooks, because your hands don’t work don’t forget about the rarely mentioned bull Huss.
Ps both fish were returned and Unfortunately I am not good with technology hence the poor photos from the last fish.
