Hi all! Sorry to bore you but I’ve been out again! ?
Got set up dead on low water on Monday night, with the bigger tides and being at a different venue, I wasn’t wholly anticipating anything much.
First cast and I hauled in a doggie, great. Nothing worse than being blighted by them all night but thankfully, they weren’t around in numbers.
An hour or so passed by with nothing much to report, baits were largely untouched but then I saw a text book ray bite on my right hand rod, at last!
She put up a good scrap and as I got her to about 15yds out she zoomed off to my right and I had to chase her along the shoreline. After a while I tamed her to my feet but had no choice than to get in the waves a bit as I couldn’t drag her any higher up, she was a good size and nice and chunky.
I was absolutely made up when I weighed her, 10lbs 8oz!! Yasssss!! I had to check but she is my first double since March 12th 2019!! It’s been a long time coming for sure. I fished on but with the rising tide, the current was running hard and I was really skeptical any more would show. Not ready to completely throw in the towel, I decided to move to a different high tide mark and fish the last hour or so of the flood and maybe an hour down.
As I arrived, there was already anglers in my usual haunts and I’m not one to squeeze in if I can help it so I opted for a new spot that I’d not tried before.
I got set up (again!) and out the baits went. I couldn’t have been fishing for more than 15mins when I got my first bite. Shortly after, female no.2 was at my feet going 7lbs 7oz. She dug herself into a gully of stones about 10yds out and it took quite an effort to free her, a really good fight for a ray.
I stayed for about an hour or so after high but I was starting to nod off occasionally (it was 3am by now!!). With just a whiting to keep my interest, I decided to call it a night and packed away one rod and my gear. As I turned to retrieve the second however, I noticed the line was miles off to my right. I wondered if the tide had just picked it up but soon after I began to wind, it was apparent there was another fish on its way in. Back to the smaller males, he went 4lbs 4oz but I wasn’t disappointed after the night I’d had. I was tempted with “one last cast” but steered myself away and called it a night. Well chuffed today. ?805BF364-194D-4C72-9B0B-0B8E5E546359.pngB02142AE-2EC4-41ED-B592-4FFBF6ED7BE8.jpeg2DEFA777-1E8B-458E-A8E3-711D4C37CAC8.jpeg2D2A4953-08B1-4CFB-9445-092D0FB085FA.jpeg
