The sword & the stone

First post for a long time as tbh I have caught mainly eels & dogs since March but that’s another story.

Today’s planned trip was to fish a lull between storm fronts arriving an hour before high tide at 5pm after family duties fishing down to low before thunderstorms arrived. Venue west bexington.

Baits were squid, whole king prawns and mackerel on 3/0 pulley rigs.

The sea was rough but fishable although car sized rafts of weed drifting up and down meant a difficult evening lay ahead.

I started high up the bank but as the tide headed Out I had to reposition the rods & some bait & tackle further down to avoid line dump and shigling. Every cast ended up with weed on the line however I remained optimistic having finally plucked up the courage to try the six & bait with a dubious looking repair I brought at a car boot to gain some extra distance past the breakers. “Sheesh kebab” that thing launched it, good job I was using mono as the end of my finger may have gone with it.

Pulling in someone else’s birdsnest along with a couple of free leads another bonus.

At this point the old girl decided I’d taken enough and took revenge as I kneeled baiting up traces by the rods.

The sound of the drag spinning got my attention as I looked up the tripod & both rods hit the deck & were heading seawards. I grabbed rod A slowly made progress until I got to a birdsnesst & big clump of weed when rod B started off again so ditched rod A onto rod B slow progress with line being stripped off as fast as I could unwind then gradually clawing it back again got to another birdsnest & a huge weed clump now followed by an empty hook. Back to rod A & oh dear I haven’t seen this part of the spool for a very long time. Same again eventually got back to the weed clump/birdsnest before hand pulling in more weed a doggie with a mud rock which had been spiked by the grip lead.

Both lines had to be cut though no end tackle lost. Not entirely sure what happened & at what point, l had been holding the rods for large parts of the night & was familiar with the surge of the line either way if there was something bigger it was gone or maybe it was just weed.

Either way I was now knackered & in need of a cup of tea.B131C911-F8C1-4ABC-873C-202FF426E930.jpeg

I eventually regrouped & moved back to the high point only to narrowlyC7E9D035-35AF-4DF9-A471-6401F2824AE2.jpeg escape with my gear again as shingled so back down again.

I did end up with a couple of codling so happy with that.4D3DDDAF-E63A-46A6-A9E9-68C7DC1C8DF4.jpeg

Packed up at 2 and trudged back to the car spurred on by the arrival of the lightning.

Apologies no sword as such though I did use my knife to cut the line as left my scissors at base camp.

PS keep your drag set loose every time.

Nice report. Sounds like a bit of a rough session, and as John said, that weed can be a killer. A big old lump of Kelp & stalk took my rods & rest over a while ago. ????

Well done mate. Good effort, which gave you the rewards. Was hoping to get out myself but i have been rough as a coot.

Well done on the codling ?
