Quick round up of the last 3 trips I've had. On Friday met up with John for our usual Friday night bash, John had read about a couple big huss coming from Blackpool sands and was determined to bag one himself, so that was the venue sorted. John got there earlier than me, as I was on dog walking duties before I was allowed out to play, by the time I arrived he had had a few Whiting out and was beginning to get fed up with them nicking the bait aimed at better fish.
I had some dead old worms to use up and they produced a few expected Whiting and a Pouting, after the worms had gone I was on fish and squid in the hope a Rockling was around, which they wasn't:(, baits was getting hit by the Whiting and not lasting that long, John had upped his hooks to 6/0s and big baits, this didn't deter the Whiting either and he was getting some cracking bites from the little buggers. After chatting for a bit and noticing my rod bouncing a bit and thinking, another Whiting was shredding the bait, I was very surprised that this Whiting felt a lot heavier and was kicking back, twas cos he wasn't a ting but a huss, ok wasn't a big or medium one and at just over a foot long, but Johns target achieved none the less :) :) .
Wasn't long after that we packed it in, fed up at nicked bait and I was feeling knackered going up and down the beach so home time called.

Couple days later I was down Salcombe way still hoping to snag a Gilthead, well yet again it wasn't to be, Just a 2lb Bass, a small Pouting and a strap eel for nearly 6 hours rod watching, its odd this is one of a few places that I can fish for hours without a bite and still feel happy and not think bugger this im off home.

Today I was up early and over the Breakwater hoping the Herring had started to come in, bugger all came out till dawn showed her head, then the Mackerel started, with fish a chuck for most of the time, double shots of Mackerel and Whiting every third cast, went down from using two feathers to a candy lure and started getting a few better fish with one just under the pound mark. After bagging enough for mine and the dogs tea I swapped to a drop shot and fished close in, a few Wrasse and a lovely bronze Pouting came out on the first few drops, then two seals decided I was worth watching so bobbed about just 10ft in front of me for a while, after lots of verbal encouragement to feck right off!! the duly did, next cast after they had swam off gave up a small but lovely Coalfish, was very happy with him.
Next cast found a snag, pulled, snapped, home time.

Brilliant report, nice one ?

I got to get over to you for lots of different fish and you need to come to me for a gilt. As you know just the 6 yesterday! Ha, ha. We are at Weymouth Stone pier tomorrow.

I tend to get there at first light as there seems to be lots more fish around then and not many people, bit of a early start from up your way to fish it tho.
Indeed. I wouldn’t normally get up at 3am or whatever and make a two hour drive for a mackerel session, I must admit.

Then again it might be worth doing as a one off to fill the freezer a bit.

Mind you, need some space IN the freezer ?

Great report and glad to hear of some fish filled sessions. Heard a few reports of little Coalies being caught, let’s hope they come back like they used to.

Great report - well done Bob! ????
