Up and away early to try to get a parking spot on Swanage Pier, I'd rather give money to the pier than the thieving council; it was not as crowded as I thought it would be so I got parked and fishing by 8am.
It was cold, a stiff breeze and it was drizzling, not what you expect in June, I found some gloves in the pocket of the waterproof jacket and I was wimp enough to wear them.
Fishing was slow with just a few Corkwing and Ballan wrasse, there were a few small fish showing mid water and size 16 sabikis fished out a couple of Sand Smelt; species No.5.
Then a welcome Baillon's Wrasse, not that rare at this venue but a struggle elsewhere, No 6,
then next up was a Tompot Blenny, No.7.
I moved up to the top deck for easier float fishing when the flow direction changed, I had a float out all day, from 8 am until 3:30pm, not a touch, nothing not even on live Sand Eel. More wrasse and tompots and plenty of sand smelt on sabikis, there were shoals of them up to about 7" long.
A lady pointed out some tiny fish near the surface, "I bet you can't catch them", a 'hold my beer moment' and , to her surprise, and to be honest, mine too,
some Sand Eels took the sabikis first jiggle. several foul hooked but one fairly hooked in the mouth, Species No. 8.
The next attempt got another Sand Eel and a tiny Pollack but that was foul hooked so not counted.
A funny day, alternately cold when fog rolled through and hot when it cleared. Four more species, some banter with passers by, a good day out.
