After a bout of covid raging through the family for a couple of weeks this was the first week we could get out. Despite feeling utterly knackered, big frost overnight, having awful tides and bright sunshine, meaning the odds of success were miniscule, nothing ventured, nothing gained, so out I went with a little box lures, new rod and my trusty slammer went for a walk across my trusty piece of reef. Water wasn’t as clear as I would like, plus there was lots of weed floating around meant that the obvious choice was an albie snax, I have no idea why these lures work, but, they just do. Having slipped all the way over the weed to the first part of the reef it was just a delight to be out in the sunshine and the by the sea. I don’t really enjoy fishing soft plastics as they bore me, so I was blissfully drifting away in the glorious surroundings when out of nowhere barely 12ft off my rod tip I got a hit, it felt like an electric shock, after a few seconds of confusion I got my arse into gear and quickly brought in a 44cm bass to start the year. Earliest start to a lure fishing year for a few years and it was stunning to be out.
