Hi all

This is my first post as a new member.

I fish the solent from a small day boat and have tried several times for Tope without success. I have tried mackerel fappers as bait.
I would really appreciate advise on marks and the correct bait.
I run out of Chichester harbour.

Thanks in advance

Not my area or a species I target Mark, but welcome to the Madhouse! 👍👍

It's a welcome from me Mark, I only eat what I catch as long as it's sizeable and within the regs.

Hi Mark
I am out of Chi harbour - mooring at Itchenor. Guess you are out of Sparkes or Northney ? Lots of tope around but to do with right tides. Further out - smaller tides needed.
Depends on how far you can go on yours& amount of anchor rope! Areas to try - 3 wrecks (north of nab): Utopia: Pullar gully (south of Boulder): Gullies to north west of Boulder opposite the Looe Channel markers; North of that is Outsetter between Medmery bank & Streets ;Mixon hole area off Selsey. Mackerel, whole squid etc do the trick.

This site is worth looking at for marks: https://www.boat-angling.co.uk/
Porcellus on 77 if I am out.

Welcome to TSF 👍 Can't offer local info as you're a long way south of me. Our best tope days are often created by chunking out lots of fresh mackerel/herring and fishing a smallish livebait in the trail. Another favourite is a fishing chunks of fresh baits kebab style on a 'hair rig' aka 'dongle'. Both methods using circle hooks and 200lb nylon. Medium baits often work better than big baits - less dropped/missed runs and better hookups.
