So Saturday saw our annual club 24 hr rover match my main fishing partner was ill but another mate was let down by his buddy so along with most of the club we headed to ferrybrige with reports of good bags of bream hefty gurnard Mac and scad along with all the other bits it was a no brainer arfter a decent 40 min hike along the shingle we set up expecting a deluge of specimen fish sadly it was the opposite apart from a bit of early excitement where my mate pulled out a surprise strap we had no interest for nearly 6 hrs I eventually snagged a bream closely followed by another both sizeable for the comp just night fell and I had a flurry of activity I caught pout dogs and a scad my mate managed one sizeable pout I then sat on two large baits in hope of a bass ray Or decent conger plenty of straps but all under the 90 cm limit for the comp I fished hard all night and tried hard for scad at day break then Macs but nothing my mate finally managed a Mac to weigh in and that was it news at the weigh in was much the same slow infact I weighed in the most fish think I Finnished 2 nd or 3 rd been looking forward to this comp wot a let down desperately needs a blow up there ??

todayi needed to get my mojo back so along with my daughter we with Bert headed to branscome 1/4 of rag 3 Mac fillets and 4 squid is all i took to see wot I chould wangle out any way Evie wangled out 3 cracking macs in quick Succession I snagged a tub a se ray (ussaly in double figures by now down here with these but this is my first this year and I’ve put the effort in personally I believe the huge amount of hill nets off branscome and Seaton. Have hit the ray population hard this year ☹️) Evie then had a dog and a strap u snagged a hound and eves saw me off with another strap so nice little late summer species bash happy days ?. Back to chisel Friday she owes me ?.

Brilliant report and pictures, nice one ??

Good efforts mate, at least you had a few.

I’m beginning to think the ray have really been hammered by the commercials, think we need another skate ban for a few years.
With any luck it might put a few of the buggers out of business.

Great report and photos Tats! ??

Looks like you've also joined the "being outfished by the offspring" club! ??

Wonder if air pressure put them off? I know temps dropped and N/E wind.
At least you was there out and on Beach but maybe using wrong tools? As this "Chisel" thought that was for Wood Butchers and you being a Brickie thought was Bolsters!;)
Do we see a New Chicken rod there?
No new rod yet the cobras doing its thing for now to be fair it makes up most of my catches I like it but it’s no chicken rod ?

Great report fella. Good session to boot. (y)

Ian.

I know of a few netters and they always go on how they don’t make a lot from skate but boast about the amount they catch and that the real red letter days are when they snag a turbot happens more than you’d think off beer but know one really targets them on charters we went out the other day to the bream grounds and it was infested with nets we had to move it’s getting worse out there the Cornish sole boats and there 5 mile long nets are now hammering it aswell is anyone going to stop them doubt it they don’t fish stainable they keep going till there’s nowt left few years ago Seaton was a almost dead cert for plaice haven’t herd of any off there this year now the ray fishing has died a death the minute some one puts a post on face book with a pic of a double figure ray boom nets are out on the way to ferrybrige on sat we chould see a commercial as close as he chould get working the shore line no shits given just hammer it as much as they can then the hill netters net Wots left then we who pump millions into the economy every year are left with f@@k all in a few years time it probably won’t be worth takeing my daughter fishing there will be nothing but straps to catch ?

I agree with you, hate to see it happening but you’re right, the commercials will try and take every penny they can trawl up then switch to another species and hammer that.
They talk of sustainability but it’s clearly not because fish stocks keep declining.

When we had the skate ban up here (not sure if it was on your coast or not?), within a couple of years there were stacks of ray coming in to anglers.
Soon as fishing was back on, shore catches dwindled within a year.
Same with undulates. No take, undulates everywhere, now they’re hard to find again.

I think at the very least they should ban taking certain species for a couple of years so stocks can recover.
Like letting a field lie fallow for a season or two.

Just had a look at Marine traffic. There are usually a bunch of Belgian boats fishing of the Newquay area for Sole. Today is the first day I haven't seen any. 9 French boats there though, some very close to the 12 mile limit.
