I fished the slapton open for the first time yesterday got down there early to claim our spot the winds were gusting 40 mph but from behind us the sea was fairly flat lots of birds working in front of us turned out they where hitting sandeel but there was life out there . We set up then got treated to horrendous rain and wind where we just sat in our shelters and held on to em once cleared we talked shit with others and had bacon sandwiches ?. Eventually fishing started and I was straight into wot felt like a decent hound in t tore off down tide and come off ??and altho it whould have been no good for the comp as you can’t weigh them in it whould have been nice to have a hound as my first fish of the year . Then we started getting a steady steam of fish dogs and whiteing and nothing else ( this comp is pretty much always won by a specimen dog and ting ) but I chould not find a sizeable whitening and me dogs were no bigger than 1 lb 9 oz and this is how it ended I had one dog to weigh in my other four mates were in the same boat either sizeable dog or sizeable ting only one of us managed both . But this was my first time and a lerning curve now I had been fishing large hooks on either a running ledger or a 2 hook loop but fishing around us was Julian shambrook along with a load of the samilite guys and there tactic was different 3 hook flapper small hooks send em out leave ten minutes bring them in unhook fish and it worked Julian won the comp with dog and ting and most of the guys in that group finished in the top ten match fishing tactics rather than specimen fishing tactics. Just ti a did great bunch of blokes and we had a good laugh with them thru out the day at the weigh in along with the ting and dogs there was a nice dab and a cracking 11 lb + se ray the lady who caught that finished 2nd over all because she only had a small whiteing to back it up and it’s about best two fish ps she snagged it 8 mins into the start of the comp ? there were orso quite a few hounds caught mostly in the 4lb bracket but did hear of 1 10 lb fish so a nice start to the year decent lerning curve a good laugh on to next weeks first club comp now which is at slapton ???

Great report and good photos Tats! Well done ma bute - didn't even know there were any compos on at Slapton! Good start to the year!

Brilliant report mate, well done on getting some fish out and does pay to look around at what the others are doing, so can guess tactics for the club match;). Was any Mackerel caught as they usually score high there?

Water was dirty up to 300 yards out no macs caught and generally not very big this time of year one of the reasons I think I chouldnt find decent whiteing yesterday was arfter the first hound run and hear about the ray I kinda got preoccupied with marquee fish and missed the initial first run of big ting arfter the first hr the pins come on the feed and was getting mullerd buy them again come the evening it was dog a Chuck ?‍♂️As to tactics on club comp sort of similar but can weigh in hounds orso our comps are best of any two species so as long as there in size not so important about getting specimens altho will be nice I’ll go all out for hounds as the ting and dogs should be there ?

Sounds a great comp to fish.
Needing 2 biggest fish helps eliminate the "fluke" element.

Yes Altho the ray was a defo fluke she chouldt back it up with a decent dog or ting so the better angler prevailed in the end to be fiar he has been fishing that comp for 30 yrs and Sponsors it heavily so about time he won it well deserved in my book ?

Great effort mate, sounds like a nice day anyway.

Best specimen or best two is so much better than heaviest bag, glad they do that.
