Visited my local(ish) shop and ended up buying a new rod and reel to get back to things.

Going to try and get to the water this week for some casting practice, but unsure of positioning of the reel(multi) on the rod and where I should have my supporting arm - was going to use a bit of white electrical tape to mark the grip where my right hand should be, so im im the same place each time.

Any pointers as to how I should set it up, or is it based of what feels right to me?

I prefer to have my reel down, it took some getting used to and the timing right but improved my casting power big time and distance.
Just go with what feels right for you at first then have a dabble on positioning the reel at different places👍🎣

Cheers yeah I'll be having the reel down, just wasn't sure how far down (or up from the bottom) it should be. Iv seen everyone has it at a different height so assume its down to preference and comfort

Start with the reel say 10in up from the butt cap and adjust as you see fit. It's a personal choice as is the distance between hands👍

Hold on!
What rod n reel have you invested in?. and why reel down?
Have you done that before,?.

Have bought a century t900 and a penn casting special

Haven't fished with the reel down before, only in the high position, and used to cast on a field with the reel down, but it has been a while

Most obvious answer is to use a sliding reel seat ;)
fit a reel tie the line to something solid, stick the butt in your belly & try to wind a bend in to it, adjust the reel position Until you can wind it comfortably, mine are about 32 cm up, but can go lower with a reducer fitted.
Reel down controlling the spool with my left hand feels much more natural to me.

Hell of pokey rod that mate. (But bloody nice) i use reel down about 8inch from the butt. Can feel very heavy/strange for the first few trips, but over time is becomes second nature.

Thanks- have had a play about with it today on a field and just need to get used to it.
I wanted to get something decent as the venues close to me are mixed/rough ground and has been recommended by a few anglers now and it seems to be the rod of choice in the area

If your practicing casting an eight ounce lead will give better feel through the rod and be closer to the the weight you will be fishing with. I've got a pair of T900sgt's that I've only used twice on visits to Bristol channel and only used seven ounce leads with large baits up there. I've been on the field with them and ended up with the reel fourteen inches up from the butt cap as with the reel too low it made winding in several times over a session more tiring, they are long powerfull rods but great to cast with .
